Background: Epidemiological studies suggest that there is a link between pneumococcal infection and adverse cardiovascular outcomes such as myocardial infarction. Multiple studies have evaluated the protective effect of the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccination (PPV23), but results have varied. Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to summarize available evidence on the impact of PPV23 on cardiovascular disease.

Current literature has identified some risk factors for this disease; however, there is yet to be a comprehensive study that pools all evidence to provide estimates of risk. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify various risk factors, excluding immunosuppressive medication, that may predispose an individual to developing HZ.

Since 2010, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is in use for infant immunization programs to reduce rates of pneumococcal disease, but is not routinely used in adults. Recent literature suggests PCV13 may be used in adult vaccination programs as well.
