Changes in the activities of some metabolic factors have been suggested to increase the risk of conditions associated with the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). We examined changes in oxytocin (OT), a metabolic factor, and OT receptor (OTR) mRNA levels throughout the developmental period in rats of intrauterine undernutrition. Pregnant rats were divided into two groups: a maternal normal nutrition (mNN) and maternal undernutrition (mUN) group.

Background: Faculty evaluation surveys in the frame of student evaluation of teaching (SETs) are a widely utilized tool to assess faculty teaching. Although SETs are used regularly to evaluate teaching effectiveness, their sole use for making administrative decisions and as an indicator of teaching quality has been controversial.

Methods: A survey containing 22 items assessing demographics, perception, and factors for evaluating faculty was distributed to medical students at our institute.

Photosystem II (PSII) utilizes light energy to split water, and the electrons extracted from water are transferred to Q, a plastoquinone molecule bound to the D1 subunit of PSII. Many artificial electron acceptors (AEAs) with molecular structures similar to that of plastoquinone can accept electrons from PSII. However, the molecular mechanism by which AEAs act on PSII is unclear.

Sex steroid hormones are important for the maintenance of metabolism in both sexes. Oxytocin (OT) is a neuropeptide that is synthesized in hypothalamic regions, secreted from the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and is involved in the control of appetite, body weight, and metabolism. Estrogen and OT both play a role in the metabolism of nutrients, and OT has potential in the prevention of obesity.

Failure to promptly detect intravenous (IV) infiltration can often lead to damaging effects, such as necrosis and compartment syndrome, which increase the length of hospital stay and cost of care. Currently, nurses periodically monitor the vascular access device (VAD) site and extremity for symptoms of swelling, blanching, and change in temperature. However, nurses are often unable to monitor the VAD site frequently enough to detect subtle symptoms that may present immediately following an infiltration or extravasation.

Oxytocin (OT) affects many behavioral, psychological, and physiological functions, including appetite and body weight regulation. Central and peripheral OT levels are markedly affected by gonadal steroids, especially estrogen, and the anorectic effects of estrogen are partially mediated by OT in rodents. In this study, the relationship between the estrogen milieu and serum OT levels was evaluated in women of reproductive age under physiological ( = 9) and supraphysiological estrogenic conditions ( = 7).

It has been well established that undernutrition and low energy availability disturb female reproductive functions in humans and many animal species. These reproductive dysfunctions are mainly caused by alterations of some hypothalamic factors, and consequent reduction of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Evidence from literature suggests that increased activity of orexigenic factors and decreased activity of anorexigenic/satiety-related factors in undernourished conditions attenuate GnRH secretion in an integrated manner.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers created a hybrid plasmonic device by combining guided light and surface plasmon polaritons within a specially designed waveguide, which involved evaporating gold onto a silicon substrate.
  • The device demonstrated a self-imaging effect, where light patterns were reproduced in the gold-covered section, impacting the intensity of the output signal.
  • The study revealed that varying the length of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide alters self-imaging conditions, suggesting potential advancements in integrating these devices into compact photonic circuits.

Chip-scale optical devices operated at wavelengths shorter than communication wavelengths, such as LiDAR for autonomous driving, bio-sensing, and quantum computation, have been developed in the field of photonics. In data processing involving optical devices, modulators are indispensable for the conversion of electronic signals into optical signals. However, existing modulators have a high half-wave voltage-length product (VπL) which is not sufficient at wavelengths below 1000 nm.

Cellular senescence is a highly stable cell-cycle arrest induced by DNA damage and various cellular stresses. Recently, we have revealed that lymphocyte antigen 6 complex, locus D (LY6D) is responsible for senescence-inducing stress-evoked vacuole formation through induction of Src family kinase (SFK)-mediated macropinocytosis. However, the signaling molecule(s) transducing the macropinocytosis signal from extracellular LY6D to the cytoplasmic SFK are unknown.
