The DERMIS Study: Methodologies, Results, and Implications for the Future.

Ongoing innovation in diabetes technologies has led to the development of advanced tools such as automated insulin delivery (AID) systems that adjust insulin delivery in response to current and predicted glucose levels, residual insulin action, and other inputs (eg, meal and exercise announcements). However, infusion sets continue to be the "Achilles heel" of accurate and precise insulin delivery and continued device use. A recent study by Kalus et al (DERMIS Study) revealed higher vessel density and signals of inflammation by optical coherence tomography (OCT), in addition to increased inflammation, fat necrosis, fibrosis, and eosinophilic infiltration by histopathology.

Rogue Hairs: A Mixed-Method Characterization of a Previously Unreported Entity.

Introduction: We define rogue hairs as unusually long hairs on the face outside of the typical hormone-driven hair-bearing areas. These represent a common and previously undocumented phenomenon. This mixed-method study describes the frequency and clinical features of rogue hairs using a case series, patient survey, and social media analysis.

Evaluation of Insulin Pump Infusion Sites in Type 1 Diabetes: The DERMIS Study.

Objective: Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) for type 1 diabetes is increasing in use. Pump site failures are common, but little is known about skin changes from pump use. Using noninvasive optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography (OCTA), and skin biopsies, we evaluated skin changes from chronic insulin infusion.

Growth-Related Responses to the Threat of COVID-19 among Adolescents.

The main objective of our study was to determine whether the experience of the types of pandemic threats included in the study, could activate development responses among adolescents and what the role of the level of stress experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic is in the process of post-traumatic PTG growth. We also made an attempt to investigate whether personality traits and gender were predictors of PTG growth in adolescents. Therefore, the theoretical bases for the interpretation of the obtained results are models of post-traumatic growth (PTG), mainly by Calhoun and Tedeschi.

Perceived Partner's Self-Control and Social Support Effects on Relationship Satisfaction in Couples Experiencing Infertility or Miscarriage: Dyadic Analyses.

The process that infertile couples and those after a miscarriage go through is unpredictable and difficult to control; therefore, it is associated with a lowered sense of control for both partners. Uncontrolled stress creates a higher level of anxiety, which is associated not only with a lower quality of life but also with worse results from infertility treatment and higher risks of miscarriage. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the partner's perceived self-control and marital satisfaction in the context of the partners' coping strategies.

Closeness to Parents and Experiencing Threats with COVID-19 Mediates the Link between Personality and Stress among Adolescents.

Purpose: many researchers have already established that the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic poses a threat to adolescent psychological health. Studies on the COVID-19 pandemic mainly focus on individual psychological consequences, such as anxiety, depression or stress. The presented study added a family context to psychological analyses of the COVID-19 pandemic in adolescence.

Posttraumatic Growth and Spirituality in Mothers of Children with Pediatric Cancer.

A child's cancer, as a life-threatening illness, is classified as a traumatic event both for the child him-/herself and for his/her relatives. Struggling with a traumatic experience can bring positive consequences for an individual, which is referred to as posttraumatic growth. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between posttraumatic growth and spirituality understood as a personal resource in mothers of children with pediatric cancer.

Openness and Communication Effects on Relationship Satisfaction in Women Experiencing Infertility or Miscarriage: A Dyadic Approach.

Our main research question is: what is the impact of these factors on relational satisfaction in spouses struggling with infertility or miscarriage? Most systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are photosensitive and ultraviolet B light (UVB) exposure worsens cutaneous disease and precipitates systemic flares of disease. The pathogenic link between skin disease and systemic exacerbations in SLE remains elusive. Decelerated lattice excitation and absence of bulk phonon modes at surfaces: Ultra-fast electron diffraction from Bi(111) surface upon fs-laser excitation.

Ultrafast reflection high-energy electron diffraction is employed to follow the lattice excitation of a Bi(111) surface upon irradiation with a femtosecond laser pulse. The thermal motion of the atoms is analyzed through the Debye-Waller effect. While the Bi bulk is heated on time scales of 2 to 4 ps, we observe that the excitation of vibrational motion of the surface atoms occurs much slower with a time constant of 12 ps.

Cutaneous manifestations of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma often accompanied by autoimmune and paraneoplastic phenomena. Up to 50% of patients with AITL present with skin manifestations. This case series highlights two cases of AITL presenting with unusual cutaneous findings: one with a medium-vessel vasculitis and another with a chronic urticarial eruption.

Cutaneous inoculation of nontuberculous mycobacteria during professional tattooing: a case series and epidemiologic study.

Background:  The increase in popularity of tattoos has coincided with an increase in reports of cutaneous inoculation of nontuberculous (atypical) mycobacteria (NTM) during the tattooing process. We report 3 NTM infections in otherwise healthy persons who received tattoos, which prompted a multiagency epidemiologic investigation.

Methods:  Tattoo artists involved were contacted and interviewed regarding practices, ink procurement and use, and other symptomatic clients.

The experience of teasing in elective cosmetic surgery patients.

The role of teasing as a motivator for patients undertaking elective cosmetic surgery was investigated. Pre-operative data were collected, using a range of standardized tests in addition to open ended questions about their experience of teasing, from 449 patients aged 18 to 70 undergoing elective cosmetic surgery in Australia. Just under half of the sample indicated that they had been teased or bullied about their appearance.

Ultra-fast electron diffraction at surfaces: from nanoscale heat transport to driven phase transitions.

Many fundamental processes of structural changes at surfaces occur on a pico- or femtosecond time scale. In order to study such ultra-fast processes, we have combined modern surface science techniques with fs-laser pulses in a pump-probe scheme. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) with grazing incident electrons ensures surface sensitivity for the probing electron pulses.

Psychosomatic disorders among adopted people.

Adoption is connected with a number of traumatic experiences, of which the experience of being abandoned by biological parents is of major significance. The fact of being abandoned usually involves a stay at a hospital and later on in various forms of family or institutionalized foster care, until the child is finally placed in an adoptive family. An important research question, both on theoretical and empirical grounds, concerns the psychosomatic dependencies between adoption and children's psycho-physical development.
