The human pathogenic yeast Candida glabrata harbors more than 20 surface-exposed, epithelial adhesins (Epas) for host cell adhesion. The Epa family recognizes host glycans and discriminates between target tissues by their adhesin (A) domains, but a detailed structural basis for ligand-binding specificity of Epa proteins has been lacking so far. In this study, we provide high-resolution crystal structures of the Epa1A domain in complex with different carbohydrate ligands that reveal how host cell mucin-type O-glycans are recognized and allow a structure-guided classification of the Epa family into specific subtypes.

[Radiation thermometry used in the study of normal kidney functional activity].

In this paper, the results of use of active radiation heat flowmetry in the nephrological clinic are presented. Employment of rationalized loading tests permitted direct relationship to be established of radiation heat losses from the surface of the "open" kidney to the status of renal functions. Patterns of changes in the infrared radiation intensity have been ascertained in health and in the blockade of canalicular reabsorption.

Computer analysis of drug therapy in cardiac patients. Preliminary communication.

The authors present a system of computer control in drug therapy of cardiac patients aimed at preventing complications and adverse interactions of simultaneously administered drugs. The system includes data on the 196 most frequently used cardiac drugs and 433 other drugs showing clinically important interactions with cardiac drugs.

[Role of computerized analysis in improvement of drug therapy and prevention of drug-induced allergic reactions].

A system of computer-aided monitoring of the safety of drug therapy was developed to reduce the incidence of drug side effects. A data bank coupled with an original algorithm system helps prevent drug-induced allergic cross reactions. The system includes information on 18 groups of drugs with similar chemical structures of combined drugs including the same agent, permitting cross allergies within the group; a total of 400 drugs are included in the system.

[Radiation thermometry and contact thermometry in patients with pyelonephritis].

Unlabelled: A study is presented of 79 patients with acute and chronic pyelonephritis examined by means of dynamic calorimetry and contact thermometry. Thermal asymmetry of the lumbar region were revealed in 22 patients by means of contact thermometry. Dynamic calorimetry revealed changes of the transitional process in 75 patients as compared with the control.

[A method of dynamic teplometry].

With the help of the proposed scheme of the unit the dynamics of the thermal losses has been studied. The measurements of the heat flow were taken from the body surface of both sick and healthy people in the area of their organs' projection. It has been found that the loading test, which leads the investigated system out of the state of rest, results in the change of radiation heat losses from the body surface.

[Application of dynamic radiation thermometry in the diagnosis of chronic glomerulonephritis].

The author provides data concerned with the examination of 71 patients suffering from glomerulonephritis with the aid of dynamic radiation thermometry, with the procedure of thermometry and assessment of the results. It is concluded that dynamic thermometry may be used for diagnostic purposes as well as for treatment efficacy control.

[Recapitulation in the development of the components of the counterflow system in the vertebrate metanephros].

The investigation has been performed on 107 renal preparations obtained from persons of various age (from 5-month-old fetuses up to 45 years of age), certain representatives of other classes of the Vertebrata are also included: fish, amphibia, reptile and mammalia at various stages of pre- and postnatal periods of ontogenesis by means of preparing graphic and plastic reconstructive models, histological investigation and microdissection. [Experience in using helium laser therapy for acute anorectal thrombosis and thrombophlebitis].

Clinical observation over 61 cases of acute anorectal thrombosis and thrombophlebitis was carried out. The duration of the disease ranged from some months to 35 years. The clinical observations have proved the advantages of laserotherapy over phototherapy with monochromatic incoherent red light and its high therapeutic activity in acute anorectal thrombosis and thrombophlebitis.
