The spin of an electron or a nucleus in a semiconductor naturally implements the unit of quantum information--the qubit. In addition, because semiconductors are currently used in the electronics industry, developing qubits in semiconductors would be a promising route to realize scalable quantum information devices. The solid-state environment, however, may provide deleterious interactions between the qubit and the nuclear spins of surrounding atoms, or charge and spin fluctuations arising from defects in oxides and interfaces.

Leptomeningeal dissemination (LMD), the metastatic spread of tumor cells via the cerebrospinal fluid to the brain and spinal cord, is an ominous prognostic sign for patients with the pediatric brain tumor medulloblastoma. The need to reduce the risk of LMD has driven the development of aggressive treatment regimens, which cause disabling neurotoxic side effects in long-term survivors. Transposon-mediated mutagenesis studies in mice have revealed numerous candidate metastasis genes.

However, the cellular functions of CARF and the mechanisms governing its effect on senescence, apoptosis, or proliferation are still unknown. Our previous studies have shown that (i) CARF is up-regulated during replicative and stress-induced senescence, and its exogenous overexpression caused senescence-like growth arrest of cells, and (ii) suppression of CARF induces aneuploidy, DNA damage, and mitotic catastrophe, resulting in apoptosis via the ATR/CHK1 pathway.

Sub-mitral aneurysms are rarely reported clinical entity. Though a variety of etiologies are proposed, congenital weakness of the mitral valve annulus is the most widely accepted one. A 17-year-old boy with sub-mitral aneurysm presented with severe mitral regurgitation, which was diagnosed by echocardiography and successfully managed surgically.

CARF overexpression was shown to cause growth arrest of human cancer cells and premature senescence of normal cells through activation of the p53 pathway. Because replicative senescence involves permanent withdrawal from the cell cycle in response to DNA damage response-mediated signaling, in the present study we investigated the relationship between CARF and the cell cycle and whether it is involved in the DNA damage response.

Design And Setting: A retrospective study was conducted from 85 consecutive young patients treated as outpatients or admitted due to stroke or myocardial infarction at a tertiary care hospital.
Enhancing the deposition and permeation of 5-fluorouracil across human epidermis assisted by appropriately charged and well-defined peptide dendrimers was investigated. Peptide dendrimers with arginine as the terminal amino acid and having a range of terminal positive charges (4(+), 8(+) and 16(+)) were synthesized by solid phase peptide synthesis. Various parameters including effect of peptide dendrimers on the solubility and partition coefficient of 5-FU, degradation of drug in skin as well as deposition and permeation of 5-FU in/through skin were studied.

Methods: Junior residents and expert surgeons performed standardized motor tasks under microscopic and endoscopic visualization.
Background: Earlier, proteomic profiling of a Serous Ovarian Carcinoma (SeOvCa) progression model in our lab had identified significantly enriched expression of three double-strand break (DSB) -repair proteins viz. RAD50, NPM1, and XRCC5 in transformed cells over pre-transformed, non-tumorigenic cells. Analysis of the functional relevance of enhanced levels of these proteins was explored in transformed ovarian cancer cells.

We demonstrate here a noninvasive spatial metrology technique, based on the microscopic modeling of three electrical measurements on a single-atom (phosphorus in silicon) spin qubit device: hyperfine coupling, ground state energy, and capacitive coupling to nearby gates. This technique allows us to locate the qubit atom with a precision of ±2.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Asymmetrical cranial vaults resulting from external forces on an infant's head can be caused by abnormal sutural development (synostotic plagiocephaly) or abnormal external forces acting on an intrinsically normal, developing cranium (deformational plagiocephaly).
Discussion: The incidence of posterior plagiocephaly has increased dramatically since the initiation of the "Back to Sleep" campaign against sudden infant death syndrome. The majority of cases are due to deformational plagiocephaly, but rigorous diagnostic evaluation including physical examination and radiological imaging must be undertaken to rule out lambdoid synostosis in extreme or refractory cases.

The management of patients with the triad of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis, micrognathia and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is challenging for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon because it involves achieving the desired oral opening, correction of micrognathia, and correction of the obstructed airway. Seven of the authors' triad patients, in whom only the release of ankylosis was performed, developed bradycardia and respiratory distress during postoperative jaw physiotherapy, leading to their non-compliance for active jaw physiotherapy and subsequent reankylosis. This paper suggests a new surgical protocol for the management of patients with the triad, to achieve correction of the obstructed airway, relief of the respiratory distress symptoms, correction of micrognathia and restricted mouth opening.

Though reproducibility challenges remain in making large numbers of cold antiprotons (p¯) and positrons (e(+)) interact, 5±1 simultaneously confined ground-state atoms are produced and observed on average, substantially more than previously reported. Increases in the number of simultaneously trapped H¯ are critical if laser cooling of trapped H¯ is to be demonstrated and spectroscopic studies at interesting levels of precision are to be carried out.
