Background: In an effort to improve the clinical utility of the ICD-10, the WHO Working Group on the Classification of Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health recommended a new classification of Paraphilic Disorders in the ICD-11 to replace the ICD-10 section on Disorders of Sexual Preference. The proposed classification may have different implications for different countries.

Aim: To examine South African national laws and policies, within which Paraphilic Disorders are encountered, and to assess the implications of the new classification.

The aim of this study was to estimate the contributions of ethnic group and socioeconomic status as social determinants related to disability and disease activity in Chilean Mapuche and non-Mapuche patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Descriptive cross-sectional study with a stratified hospital-based sample of 189 patients in treatment with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. We assessed disability as categorical variable with the Health Assessment Questionnaire, disease activity with the Disease Activity Score instrument, and socioeconomic status with a standard questionnaire used by the Chilean government.

Objective: South Africa has a shortage of facilities and psychiatrists to assess adjudicative competence of prisoners awaiting assessment under sections 77 to 79 of the Criminal Procedures Act of 1977. Various solutions have been proposed by the Department of Health. The recent linking of a Magistrate's court and a prison by videoconferencing offers the opportunity to implement a forensic telepsychiatry service.

Founder populations hold tremendous promise for mapping genes for complex traits, as they offer less genetic and environmental heterogeneity and greater potential for genealogical research. Not all founder populations are equally valuable, however. The Afrikaner population meets several criteria that make it an ideal population for mapping complex traits, including founding by a small number of initial founders that likely allowed for a relatively restricted set of mutations and a large current population size that allows identification of a sufficient number of cases.

Objective: To investigate the understanding and expectations of defendants referred to Valkenberg Hospital for 30-day observation.

Design: Defendants referred for 30 days of psychiatric assessment were surveyed by means of a semi-structured interview within 3 days of admission.

Many studies have confirmed an association between violent behavior, impulsivity, and sensation seeking in nonpsychotic subjects. Schizophrenic patients (n = 49) who had been found unfit to stand trial were investigated for violence, according to index offenses and longitudinal histories (before and after admission) for violence. Those charged with violent offenses were significantly more often married with children, and were equally likely to direct their assaultiveness to strangers, acquaintances, and family members.

The prevalence of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) was determined using an Elisa method in sera of 60 patients with autoimmune diseases. ACA were correlated with clinical manifestations of the antiphospholipid syndrome and other serological markers of autoimmunity. Sixty three percent of sera had ACA IgG (+) and 50% ACA IgM (+).
