The frequency of the F508 deletion (delta F508) has been analyzed in 189 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients from the European part of the USSR, viz. 127 northern Slavonians (Leningrad region), 30 southern Slavonians (the Ukraine), 10 central Slavonians (Moscow region), 14 Moldavians (Kishenev region) and 8 Lithuanians (Vilnius region). The distribution of CF+ chromosomes with and without delta F508 varied significantly in the different ethnic groups studied and correlated with the clinical manifestation of CF.

Clinical studies of changes in dental electric excitability before and after torus anesthesia and cat and monkey experiments with the use of morphohistochemical technique of detecting horseradish peroxidase (a marker) in Gasser's ganglion [correction of Hasser's node] 72 hrs following the marker administration into canine, incisor, and gingival cavities have revealed no cross innervation of the teeth and gingiva at the level of the peripheral component of the trigeminal nerve branches.

Four high-frequency alleles, also reported in other populations, were observed. The frequencies of alleles for the polymorphic sites MspI and EcoRI of the COL1A2 gene, HindIII of the COL2A1 gene and EcoRI of the COL3A1 gene were found to be 0.

If confirmed on a larger sample of CF patients from the USSR, this result might be indicative of the presence of a larger heterogeneity of CF mutations in the Soviet population than in other European populations.

The analgesic effect was the most marked in alveolitis and periodontitis, less so in inflammations of the pulp, and no effect could be achieved in acute purulent pulpitis. The authors suppose that pain syndrome alleviation after electropuncture stimulation and after administration of anti-inflammatory drugs is explained mainly by changed hemodynamics at the site of inflammation, this resulting in reduction of the edema and in diminished effects of biochemical substances released in the course of inflammation.

Electrophoresis and CNBr-peptide mapping showed that extended inserts and deletions as well as rough impairments of post-translation processing were not detected in collagens of the I, II and III types from these patients. In the patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome of the II type distinct increase was observed both in the total ratio of collagens III/I (P = 0.

The odontoblast processes (OP) were slightly bent at their bases to run further straight and parallel to each other across dentin and predentin. The OP cytoplasm contained numerous microfilaments and solitary microtubules.

The authors relate a unique observation of the familial form of proximal myodystrophy with early contractures and malignant course. The primary character of muscular injury was confirmed on electromyography. The data of electrocardiography and echocardiography attested to the presence in the patients of the signs of cardiomyopathy.

Baseline thresholds of pulp stimulation proved different in anterior teeth group and premolar/molar group. Analgetic drugs used had more pronounced effect in cases of molar pulp stimulation.

The simple technique for isolation of high-molecular eucaryotic DNA has been proposed. It includes cell or nuclei lysates by sodium dodecylsulfate in the presence of pronase, proteins precipitation by potassium acetate, DNA precipitation by ethanol. The DNA isolated by this technique is easily cleaved by restriction endonucleases and can be used for analysis of the unique genes by blot-hybridization.

The absence of type II collagen, a decrease in the amount of proteoglycans (PG), and structural changes in PG, namely, increased electrophoretic mobility of PG, lower relative content of chondroitin 4-sulfate (Ch4-S), lower molecular weight and decreased total chondroitin sulfate (ChS) sulfation, were detected. Increased amounts of type I and type III collagens, atypical for hyaline cartilage, were revealed.

The paper summarizes experience gained for many years by the All-Union Research Methodological Center for Study of Hereditary Neuromuscular Diseases. The specialists of the Center render counselling and therapeutic assistance to patients afflicted with neuromuscular diseases. The counselling and diagnostic services are characterized by the fact that it is based on the activity of a large hospital intended for the treatment of various diseases.

The lethal effects of both 6-3H-pyrimidines (the number of lethal hits per 3H decay) do not differ from those of [3H-methyl]thymidine and 5-3H-cytosine. The mutagenic effects (at equal survival rates) are as follows: 6-3H-thymidine approximately 3H2O less than [3H-methyl]thymidine less than 6-3H-cytosine less than 5-3H-cytosine.

The pattern of BamHI fragments of DNA from three children suggested to suffer the isolated growth hormone deficiency type. IA was not different from normal pattern registered in blot hybridization with [32P]cDNA of the growth hormone gene. The data permits one to exclude the above mentioned disease that is characterized by the deletion of HGH-N gene.
