Background: Cardiovascular mortality is markedly higher in Russia than in Western Europe and the US. Little is known about indicators of atherosclerotic risk in the Russian population. To our knowledge, this is the first study of apolipoprotein (apo) AI and B in Russia based on the WHO-IFCC standard.

A multi-enzyme immmune-assay test system was designed for serotyping of genotypes hepatitis C virus (HCV) and a method of such typing of the serum of patients with hepatitis C was worked out. The above test-system was worked out on the basis of a study of 10 type-specific peptides modeling different fragments from NS4-protein variable region of HCV. The designed test system was evaluated by using a set of 42 serum samples obtained at random from patients with chronic hepatitis C, which had been preliminarily genotyped by polymerase chain reaction.

Synthesis of constrained raloxifene analogues by complementary use of Friedel-Crafts and directed remote metalation reactions.

We report the first search for supersymmetric particles via s-channel production and decay of smuons or muon sneutrinos at hadronic colliders. The data for the two-muon and two-jets final states were collected by the D0 experiment and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 94+/-5 pb(-1). Assuming that R parity is violated via the single coupling lambda'211, the number of candidate events is in agreement with expectation from the standard model.

Plasma content of soluble fas antigen in patients with adrenal tumors and tumor-like pathologies.

We compared plasma content of soluble Fas antigen (sFas) in 59 patients with tumors and tumor-like pathologies of the adrenal cortex and medulla and 60 healthy donors (control). The incidence and content of sFas in the plasma from patients with adrenal tumors was significantly higher than in healthy donors. A direct correlation was found between sFas content and patient's age.

Interferon- (IFN-)alpha is currently the standard of care treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. A significant part of the benefit of IFN-alpha in chronic hepatitis C is believed to be related to the activation of lymphocytes such as T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, which participate in the elimination of infected cells. Histamine dihydrochloride (HDC) has been shown to potentiate the IFN-alpha-induced activation of T cells and NK cells by a mechanism that involves the protection of these lymphocytes against oxygen radical-induced functional inhibition and apoptosis.

Replacement of the positively charged signal peptide with neutral or negatively charged peptides due to substitution of Lys(-20) in the N-terminal region of the signal peptide leads to decreases in the rate of prePhoA membrane translocation in vivo and in the efficiency of prePhoA insertion into liposomes in vitro. The effect of anionic phospholipids on prePhoA insertion into model membranes is determined by the signal peptide N-terminus charge, while the dependence of prePhoA translocation across the cytoplasmic membrane in vivo is not, under the studied variations in the content of anionic phospholipids. This is evidence of the possibility of direct electrostatic interaction between the signal peptide N-terminus and anionic phospholipids, which in vivo, however, seems to involve some proteins of the Sec machinery.

[Results of study of a combined focus of leptospirosis and hantavirus infection in the Primor'e territory].

Survey of the circulation and spread of causative agents of the infection among wild rodents may predict the activation of an epizootic process and the aggravation of an epidemic situation. The status of a combined focus of leptospirosis and hantavirus infection in the Primorye Territory was studied. It was found that mixed infection may run in pocket mice (Phascogalinae) under natural conditions.

Epithelial barrier function: assembly and structural features of the cornified cell envelope.

Terminally differentiating stratified squamous epithelial cells assemble a specialized protective barrier structure on their periphery termed the cornified cell envelope (CE). It is composed of numerous structural proteins that become cross-linked by several transglutaminase enzymes into an insoluble macromolecular assembly. Several proteins are involved in the initial stages of CE assembly, but only certain proteins from a choice of more than 20 different proteins are used in the final stages of CE reinforcement, apparently to meet tissue-specific requirements.
