We have evaluated the effectiveness of compatibilizers in blends and composites produced using a solvent manufacturing process. The compatibilizers were two different types of polyethylene (linear low-density and high-density) grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) and a highly functionalized, epoxy-based compatibilizer with the tradename Joncryl. The selected material combinations were an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with MAH-based materials as compatibilizers and a polyphenylene sulfide plus polytetrafluoroethylene (PPS-PTFE) polymer blend with an epoxy-based compatibilizer.

How bacterial cells colonize new territory is a problem of fundamental microbiological and biophysical interest and is key to the emergence of several phenomena of biological, ecological, and medical relevance. Here, we demonstrate how bacteria stuck in a colony of finite size can resume exploration of new territory by aquaplaning and how they fine tune biofilm viscoelasticity to surface material properties that allows them differential mobility. We show how changing local interfacial forces and colony viscosity results in a plethora of bacterial morphologies on surfaces with different physical and mechanical properties.

The generalized master equation (GME) provides a powerful approach to study biomolecular dynamics via non-Markovian dynamic models built from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A surface relief grating with a period of 30 µm is embossed onto the surface of magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) samples in the presence of a moderate magnetic field of about 180 mT. The grating, which is represented as a set of parallel stripes with two different amplitude reflectivity coefficients, is detected via diffraction of a laser beam in the reflection configuration. Due to the magnetic-field-induced plasticity effect, the grating persists on the MAE surface for at least 90 h if the magnetic field remains present.
