Cardiac surgeons have to face the problem of impaired left ventricle function in patients undergoing routine valve or coronary procedures. The intra-aortic balloon pump is not always effective in preventing cardiac failure. The idea of using a microaxial rotating pump as a short-term perioperative support seems to be a convenient solution.

A case of a neonate with a life-threatening cardiac tamponade due to cardiac tumour is presented. Pericardiocentesis was performed and 300 ml of purulent fluid was evacuated. Pericardial drainage was undertaken.

Four children were operated on by the transpubic approach for injury to the vagina or urethra and to correct malformations within the pelvis minor. One boy had posttraumatic stricture of the urethra, and a girl presented with disruption of the urethra and vagina. One of two boys who had congenital malformations was treated for epispadias and incontinence; the other for a large urethral diverticulum caused by anal atresia.

In 56 megaureters treated by the folding technique, good results were obtained in 52 (93%). Complications in four ureters included stenosis (2) and vesico-ureteral reflux (2). The width of the megaureters and minor renal calyces, the degree of hydronephrosis, and the serum urea and creatinine levels decreased significantly after the operation.

The authors present an alternative procedure for the treatment of an external fistula of the main parotid duct. Implantation of the orifice of the duct with a flocculus of the skin into the oral cavity was performed with a good result.

The authors have removed a benign tumor of the anterior mediastinum which happened to be a hemangioma of the superior caval vein. After three months the girl is assymptomatic but, in chest radiograms, paralysis of the right part of the diaphragm persists.

The results of reimplantation of ureters in 141 children by a modified Politano-Leadbetter procedure are presented. 86 children were examined 3 to 13 years after operation. Cessation of signs of infection, reflux and ureteric obstruction was noted.
