Introduction: At the end of life, patients with advanced cancer and their informal caregivers may confront multiple existential concerns. Despite the strong potential to alleviate existential distress through psychosocial interventions, existential distress and its impact on healthcare outcomes have not yet been studied systematically. We aim to investigate the frequency, longitudinal trajectory and predictive impact of existential distress on end-of-life outcomes.

Efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG Laser with Different Output Powers on Removing Smear Layer After Retreatment of Two Different Obturation Techniques.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of an Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser on removing the filling residues and smear layer (SL) after retreatment using rotary files. Er,Cr:YSGG laser has been proposed as an additional protocol to improve root canal cleaning and removal of the filling remnants. Eighty-four mandibular premolars were divided into six groups ( = 14).

Protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid against apical periodontitis-induced cardiac injury in rats.

This study was designed to assess the possible protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on apical periodontitis (AP)-induced cardiac injury. Wistar albino rats were randomized into four groups: control; ALA; AP; and ALA + AP. Rats of the control and ALA groups were not endodontically treated, but saline and ALA (100 mg kg ) were administered.

Effects of alpha-lipoic acid therapy on experimentally induced apical periodontitis: a biochemical, histopathological and micro-CT analysis.

Aim: To investigate the possible therapeutic effects of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) in a model of chronic apical periodontitis in rats by analysing biochemical, histopathological and micro-CT parameters.

Push-Out Bond Strength and SEM Evaluation in Roots Filled with Two Different Techniques Using New and Conventional Sealers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of calcium-silicate-based sealer (Endosequence-BC-Sealer) in roots, filled with thermo-plasticized injectable technique aided by Calamus-Flow-Delivery-System, on bond strength to radicular dentin, in comparison with conventional epoxy-resin-based sealer (AH-Plus) along with cold-lateral-compaction technique. Will a single periarticular lidocaine-corticosteroid injection improve the clinical efficacy of intraarticular hyaluronic acid treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis?

Purpose: A local injection of corticosteroid-lidocaine into the periarticular soft tissue structures is used commonly for rapid pain relief. It is hypothesized that knee pain associated with knee osteoarthritis would be relieved quickly and effectively in patients receiving intraarticular hyaluronic acid combined with a periarticular lidocaine-corticosteroid injection. To test this hypothesis, the clinical effect of the combined treatment with hyaluronic acid injection alone in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis as compared in this prospective single-blinded randomized trial.

Cone beam CT evaluation of mandibular molar root canal morphology in a Turkish Cypriot population.

Objectives: Microorganisms in untreated or overlooked root canals can cause endodontic failure or infection and inflammation. Therefore, clinicians should familiarize themselves with patient's root canal anatomy and morphology. The objective of this retrospective study was to analyze and characterize mandibular root canal morphology using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a Turkish Cypriot population.

The effect of erythropoietin on biomechanical properties of the Achilles tendon during the healing process: an experimental study.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the potential biomechanical and histological benefits of systemic erythropoietin administration during the healing of Achilles tendon injury in a rat experimental model.

Methods: Eighty Sprague-Dawley female rats were included in this study. Animals were randomly assigned into two groups with 40 animals in each: erythropoietin group and control group.

Cone-beam CT evaluation of root canal morphology of maxillary and mandibular premolars in a Turkish Cypriot population.

Objectives: Because of economic and political issues, Turkish Cypriots have been emigrating from Cyprus since the 1920s, especially to the United Kingdom, other European countries and Australia. Recently, according to the UK House of Commons, Home Affairs Committee, ~300,000 Cypriot Turks were living in the United Kingdom. However, this ethnic population residing in the United Kingdom has been insufficiently analysed.

Clinical and radiographic outcomes of medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy with Anthony-K plate: prospective minimum five year follow-up data.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes, and complication rates, after a minimum of five years of follow-up after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) using an Anthony-K plate.

Methods: MOWHTO was performed on 35 knees of 34 consecutive patients. A visual analogue scale (VAS), and Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) and Lysholm scores, were used in clinical evaluation.

Giant clinodactyly and macrodactyly of the hand associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Macrodactyly is a rare congenital deformity of the extremities, and with clinodactyly is even rarer. Both conditions may also be associated with a lipofibromatous hamartoma of the median nerve. We report an adult woman with clinodactyly and macrodactyly of the fourth and fifth fingers of her left hand associated with a carpal tunnel syndrome.

To investigate the effect of PGI2, a study on fracture healing process in closed tibia fractures was designed.

CBCT evaluation of multiple idiopathic internal resorptions in permanent molars: case report.

Background: Internal inflammatory root resorption is a rare condition in permanent teeth, which requires the presence of necrotic and infected pulp tissue within the coronal portion of the root canal system as well as inflamed pulp tissue apical to the resorptive defect. The aetiology of internal root resorption is not completely understandable, trauma and chronic pulpitis are considered the main risk factors.

Background: This study was planned to evaluate both the histopathological changes under light microscope as well as the systemic organ effects following application of Ankaferd Blood Stopper® (ABS) (a mixture of five plant extracts) in an animal model of deep tissue hemorrhage.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to determine the prevalence of subclinical entheseal involvement in patients with Behçet disease via ultrasound using a newly developed method, the Madrid sonography enthesitis index.

Subjects And Methods: The study was conducted with 36 patients with Behçet disease and 46 healthy sex- and age-matched control subjects. All patients with Behçet disease who had no clinical evidence of arthritis or enthesitis underwent an ultrasound examination.

Hunter's technique without Hunter's rod.

Silicon rods initially advocated by Hunter have been widely used in two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction. Two-stage tendoplasty is an expensive procedure; with the addition of the high cost of rods, it is still more expensive. An experimental study investigated cheaper alternatives to silicon rods, but no clinical studies seem to have been reported so far.

Influence of the quality of endodontic treatment and coronal restorations on the prevalence of apical periodontitis in a Turkish Cypriot population.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of periapical lesions in root canal-treated teeth in a Turkish Cypriote population and to investigate the influence of the quality of root canal fillings and coronal restorations on the prevalence of periapical lesions.
