Background: Adenoma detection rate (ADR) is a widely touted quality measure for colonoscopy. However, there are no guidelines for minimum numbers of procedures to include to ensure reliable ADR estimates.

Objective: We sought to illustrate how a confidence interval (CI)-based approach can suggest minimum numbers for ADR calculations and provide a reasonable method for comparing ADRs and the mean number of adenomas per procedure (MAP) when relying on limited numbers of procedures.

Post-operative complications after total hip or knee replacement can delay recovery, prolong hospitalisation, increase rates of re-admission and, in the most severe cases, lead to long-term disability or even death. In this analysis of pooled data from four large, randomised, phase III clinical trials that compared the oral, direct Factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban with subcutaneous enoxaparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after total hip or knee replacement (n = 12,729), the incidence of complications, including bleeding and adverse events related to surgery (such as wound infection, wound dehiscence and haemarthrosis) are reported. Interventions and procedures relating to surgery are also compared between the groups.

The development of molecular probes and novel imaging modalities, allowing better resolution and specificity, is associated with an increased potential for molecular imaging of atherosclerotic plaques especially in basic and pre-clinical research applications. In that context, a photoacoustic molecular probe based on gold nanoshells targeting VCAM-1 in mice (immunonanoshells) was designed. The molecular probe was validated in vitro and in vivo, showing no noticeable acute toxic effects.

Both occipital encephalocele and teratomas are midline congenital malformations. Encephalocele is a form of neural tube defect in which there is a congenital defect of the cranium through which occurs a protrusion of brain matter or meninges, while teratoma is a tumor derived from all three germ layers. The association between occipital encephalocele and teratoma has not been reported to date.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potentially life-threatening condition that can be associated with significant morbidity. Thrombosis and cancer are linked by numerous pathophysiological mechanisms; the frequency of VTE and the recurrence rate are increased in the cancer population in comparison with other patient groups. VTE is the second most common cause of death in patients with cancer, but can also be the initial presenting complaint in patients with an occult malignancy.

Background: Semuloparin is a novel ultra-low-molecular-weight heparin under development for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in patients at increased risk, such as surgical and cancer patients.

In 2 double-blind studies, ambulatory patients with objectively proven, disseminated metastatic breast carcinoma (TOPIC-1) or stage III/IV non-small-cell lung carcinoma (TOPIC-2) were randomized to certoparin 3000 IU or placebo subcutaneously once daily, for 6 months. Background: Although thromboprophylaxis reduces the incidence of venous thromboembolism in acutely ill medical patients, an associated reduction in the rate of death from any cause has not been shown.

Methods: We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial to assess the effect of subcutaneous enoxaparin (40 mg daily) as compared with placebo--both administered for 10±4 days in patients who were wearing elastic stockings with graduated compression--on the rate of death from any cause among hospitalized, acutely ill medical patients at participating sites in China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, and Tunisia. Inclusion criteria were an age of at least 40 years and hospitalization for acute decompensated heart failure, severe systemic infection with at least one risk factor for venous thromboembolism, or active cancer.

We report here a mitochondria-targeted nanodelivery system for coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) that can reach mitochondria and deliver CoQ10 in adequate quantities. Multifunctional nanocarriers based on ABC miktoarm polymers (A = poly(ethylene glycol (PEG), B = polycaprolactone (PCL), and C = triphenylphosphonium bromide (TPPBr)) were synthesized using a combination of click chemistry with ring-opening polymerization, self-assembled into nanosized micelles, and were employed for CoQ10 loading.

Methods: The Epidemiologic International Day for the Evaluation of Patients at Risk for Venous Thromboembolism in the Acute Hospital Care Setting (ENDORSE) study is a multinational cross-sectional survey designed to assess the prevalence of VTE risk in the acute hospital care setting, and to determine the proportion of at-risk patients who receive effective prophylaxis, in accordance with the 2004 American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) guidelines. This paper gives the results of the ENDORSE study in the French centres in comparison with the global worldwide results of the ENDORSE study and with other Western Europe countries.

The delivery of biologically active agents to the desired site in the body and intracellular organelles is still a big challenge despite efforts made for more than five decades. With the elaboration of synthetic methodologies to branched and hyperbranched macromolecules such as miktoarm stars and dendrimers, the focus has shifted to nanocarriers able to release and direct drug molecules to a desired location in a controlled manner. We present here recent developments in the field of targeted drug delivery with a focus on two specific macromolecular nanocarriers, dendrimers and miktoarm stars, and provide examples of these nanocarriers tested in different biological systems.
