Aim: We used self-completed questionnaires to obtain a longitudinal assessment of urinary continence and urinary, bowel, and sexual domain-related quality of life (QOL) in Japanese patients undergoing radical perineal prostatectomy (RPP).
Methods: A total of 41 Japanese patients with a median age of 69 years who underwent RPP between February 2002 and February 2004 were included in the study. We measured QOL by the University of California, Los Angeles, Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) and assessed urinary continence on the basis of three different definitions of continence.
A 60-year-old man who underwent radical nephroureterectomy due to left ureteral cancer 22 months before (transitional cell carcinoma, pT4pN0Mx, grade 2, INF beta), was admitted to the hospital with the chief compliant of anorexia and body weight loss. The patient had severe leukocytosis and elevation of C-reactive protein, with no obvious focus of infection. Abdominal plain computed tomographic scan revealed left external ileac lymph node swelling.

The tumor was revealed as a round mass, attached to the falx cerebri, with marginally scattered calcification on CT scan and with slight enhancement on MRI images. And cerebral angiogram presented a mass with no tumor stain on the external carotid angiography against our preoperative diagnosis of falx meningioma.

It is fatal unless treated by allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT), which is the only curative approach. However, both treatment-related complications and graft rejection are major obstacles to treatment success.

The only curative therapy for MIOP is stem cell transplantation (SCT). Because the number of patients is limited, the conditioning regimen and the use of alternative donors for SCT have been controversial and not established.

Patients And Methods: Two hundred thirty-one standard-risk (SR) patients and 128 intermediate-risk (IR) non-B-cell ALL patients were registered from March 1995 to March 1999. After random assignment in each group, the PRED arm patients received PRED 60 mg/m2 during induction followed by PRED 40 mg/m2 over four intensifications in the SR group and three intensifications in the IR group.
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy, efficiency and patient well-being of endoscopic radical nephrectomy (ERN) with those of open radical nephrectomy (ORN) in patients with stage T1 and stage T2 renal cell carcinoma during the period from 1995 to 2003. Eighty-four patients including 53 patients receiving ERN and 31 patients receiving ORN were evaluated. The two groups were analyzed for sex, side of tumor, clinical stage, age, tumor diameter, operative time, operative blood loss, postoperative time to oral intake and ambulation.

The membrane currents were recorded by the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, reversibly and concentration-dependently increased the frequency of spontaneous EPSCs, but did not alter their amplitude distribution.

A soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) is released from the activated T cells and platelets by ill-defined proteolytic process in vitro. It has been reported that sCD40L is elevated in the serum of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, unstable angina, essential thrombocythemia, and autoimmune thrombocytopenic purupura.

Most cases of BH4-responsive PAH deficiency include mild phenylketonuria (PKU) or mild hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA), but not all patients with mild PKU respond to BH4. We performed the phenylalanine breath test as reliable method to determine the BH4 responsiveness.

Aims: To investigate the effects of the salt concentration, incubation temperature and initial pH of the medium on the fermentative ability of the halophilic lactic acid bacteria, Tetragenococcus muriaticus and T. halophilus.
Method And Results: The growth, lactic acid production and pH reduction ability of five strains of T.
X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome (XHIM), or hyper-IgM syndrome type 1 (HIGM1), is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder susceptible to recurrent bacterial infection and opportunistic infection such as Pneumocystis carinii and Cryptosporidium parvum. The long-term outcome is quite poor, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) offers the only cure. Seven patients with XHIM, from age 3 to 19 years (mean 11.

The superoinferior length, thickness and muscle fiber density of the URS area showed significant interindividual variation. A thick fascicle, extending posterolaterally from the URS and radiating to the lateral vaginal wall and other perineal tissues, was usually observed.

Morphometric analyses of the immunohistochemical expression of surfactant apoprotein A (SP-A) were carried out on the bronchioles of human congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) neonates and then compared with those in a gestational and postnatal age-matched control group. There was no difference in SP-A expression between lung specimens of the control group and unaffected lungs in the CDH group. However, compared with both these lungs, the ipsilateral lungs of the CDH group showed a significant increase in SP-A expression, namely, the number of SP-A-positive cells per bronchiole, the number of SP-A-positive cells per unit perimeter of bronchiole, and the number of SP-A-positive cells per unit bronchiolar surface area.

The contact residues of human CD44 HABD for HA have been determined by cross-saturation experiments and mapped on the topology of CD44 HABD, which we elucidated by NMR. The contact residues are distributed in both the consensus fold for the Link module superfamily and the additional structural elements consisting of the flanking regions.
