Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients with anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (anti-ARS) autoantibodies. Patients and Methods We examined 14 ILD patients with anti-ARS autoantibodies between 2004 and 2007 and retrospectively investigated their clinical, radiographic, and pathological findings.

Results: Anti-Jo-1 antibodies were the most common (10 of 14), followed by anti-OJ, anti-KS, and anti-EJ (1 each for 3 patients); 1 patient with polymyositis had both anti-Jo-1 and anti-PL-12 antibodies.

Testicular steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis during developmental and seasonal changes were investigated in male sika deer (Cervus nippon), a short-day seasonal breeder, to clarify the physiological mechanisms for reproductive function. The immunohistochemical localization of steroidogenic enzymes (P450scc, P450c17, 3betaHSD and P450arom), spermatogenesis and cell proliferation were analyzed in the testes of fetal (164 to 218 days of fetal age), fawn (0 years old), yearling (1 year old) and adult (more than 2 years old) male sika deer. Three kinds of steroidogenic enzymes, P450scc, P450c17 and 3betaHSD, essential for the synthesis of testosterone were located only in the Leydig cells of the testes from the fetal period, and these localizations did not change during developmental or seasonal stages.

Direct reprogramming of somatic cells to a pluripotent state, substantiated only three years prior, is one of the most rapidly developing areas of stem cell research. The generation of patient-derived pluripotent cells applicable to disease modelling, drug screening, toxicology tests and, ultimately, autologous cell-based therapies, has the potential to revolutionize medicine. A novel telomerase-associated protein was isolated from porcine testis. The 115-kDa protein, purified with telomerase activity, was molecular cloned using human cDNA library, and identified as MOV10. The expression levels of both MOV10 mRNA and MOV10 protein in cancer cells were 2-3 times higher than that of the normal cells, and MOV10 mRNA was highly expressed in human testis and ovary.

We present the first patient to develop drug eruption due to intravesical instillations of both epirubicin and mitomycin C. A 58-year-old-man underwent transurethral resection (TUR) for superficial bladder carcinoma followed by instillations of intravesical chemotherapy. A mouse jejunum, when incubated in vitro in Ussing chambers, was found to exhibit morphological deterioration of the villi with denudation of the epithelia (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol, 51: 406, 2005). Our study examined the involvement of apoptosis in an intestinal injury model by a DNA ladder assay and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay. Electrophoresis of mucosal DNA revealed ladders, indicating the occurrence of DNA fragmentation.

Transgenic expression of just four defined transcription factors (c-Myc, Klf4, Oct4 and Sox2) is sufficient to reprogram somatic cells to a pluripotent state. Background: Although several recent reports have shown that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) developed in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CH-C) even after having a sustained virological response (SVR) to interferon (IFN) therapy, it is not common for HCC to develop more than 10 years after SVR.

Case Presentation: A 73-year-old Japanese man with CH-C who achieved SVR to IFN therapy 13 years ago was admitted into our hospital because of huge multiple liver tumors along with marked elevation of the tumor markers. We identified a serine protease with a molecular mass of 37kDa in the midgut of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The activity of this protease (37-kDa protease: p37k) appears after pupation, when the metamorphic remodeling of the midgut is under progress. The sequence analysis of the purified protease and its cDNA revealed that p37k is a trypsin-type serine protease, which is highly similar to serine proteases of other insects, including CG4386 of Drosophila melanogaster.

Propolis possesses various physiological activities. In this study, we examined the antiangiogenic and antioxidant activities of various components from propolis: acacetin, apigenin, artepillin C, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, chrysin, p-coumaric acid, galangin, kaempferol, pinocembrin, and quercetin. We recently reported that a broad-spectrum caspase inhibitor zVAD-fmk failed, while p38 inhibitor SB203580 succeeded, to prevent chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation induced by hypoxia in tube-forming HUVECs. In this study, we investigated the reasons for zVAD-fmk's inability to inhibit these morphological changes at the molecular level. The inhibitor effectively inhibited DNA ladder formation and activation of caspase-3 and -6, but it surprisingly failed to inhibit caspase-7 activation.

Recent studies have revealed a close relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and the progression of chronic liver diseases, although relatively little is known regarding the possible mechanisms involved. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of IR on the development of liver fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis using obese diabetic Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Liver fibrosis development and glutathione-S-transferase placental form (GST-P)-positive pre-neoplastic lesions were both markedly accelerated in OLETF rats, being induced by pig serum and diethylnitrosamine (DEN), respectively.
