Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how the number of pregnancies and births affects cognitive function in postmenopausal women, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2011-2014.
  • Among the 1,259 screened women aged 60 and above, 24.3% exhibited low cognitive performance, with factors such as age, ethnicity, education level, and health conditions like diabetes and hypertension significantly influencing results.
  • The findings suggest that a higher number of pregnancies is linked to poorer cognitive performance, indicating that fewer pregnancies may contribute to better cognitive health in this demographic.

Recent advancements in photoacoustic (PA) imaging have leveraged reversibly photoswitchable chromophores, known for their dual absorbance states, to enhance imaging sensitivity through differential techniques. Yet, their deployment in tumor imaging has faced obstacles in achieving targeted delivery with high efficiency and specificity. Addressing this challenge, we introduce innovative protein assemblies, DrBphP-CBD, by genetically fusing a photosensory module from bacterial phytochrome (DrBphP) with a collagen-binding domain (CBD).

In 2004, the equine-origin H3N8 canine influenza virus (CIV) first caused an outbreak with lethal cases in racing greyhounds in Florida, USA, and then spread to domestic dogs nationwide. Although transmission of this canine virus to humans has not been reported, it is important to evaluate its zoonotic potential because of the high contact opportunities between companion dogs and humans. To gain insight into the interspecies transmissibility of H3N8 CIV, we tested its adaptability to human respiratory A549 cells through successive passages.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is largely attributed to tobacco smoke exposure. Investigating how airway epithelial cells functionally adapt to tobacco smoke is crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of COPD. The present study was to set up an in vitro model using primary murine airway epithelial cells to mimic the real-life impact of tobacco smoke.

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is a crucial experimental animal that shares many genetic, brain organizational, and behavioral characteristics with humans. A macaque brain atlas is fundamental to biomedical and evolutionary research. However, even though connectivity is vital for understanding brain functions, a connectivity-based whole-brain atlas of the macaque has not previously been made.

Casein micelle has a structure of outer hydrophilicity and inner hydrophobicity, its typical digestion characteristic is gastric coagulation. Based on calcium content as the key factor to control this process, high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) was firstly used to modify the micelle structure by mediating the tight connection between casein molecules themselves and with colloidal calcium, then the quercetin-loaded delivery systems were prepared. And in order to investigate the effect of exogenous calcium, calcium chloride was added for digestion.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how lipid-lowering drugs might be connected to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using drug-target Mendelian randomization to suggest potential new uses for these medications.* -
  • The analysis found that higher expression of HMGCR genes may lower the risk of IBD and Crohn's disease, while increased expression of NPC1L1 genes was linked to a higher risk of IBD, although no significant associations were found for PCSK9.* -
  • Overall, the results suggest that genetic variations affecting HMGCR could help reduce IBD risk, whereas variations in NPC1L1 may increase it, but the study found no significant relationships for PCSK9.*

Colloidal calcium phosphate (CCP) confers a modifiable structure to micellar casein (MC), which endows it with potential advantages as a delivery carrier. However, it is difficult to achieve multipattern release of the core material in the intestine with MC as a single wall. In this study, we prepared an anthocyanin-casein-based delivery system utilizing MC with different freezing degrees as the wall material with the objective of achieving the controlled release of anthocyanin as the model core in the intestine.

The transformation of waste plastics to fuel products is an appealing strategy to address plastic-associated environmental and energy issues. In this study, a tandem pyrolysis-catalytic upgrading approach, using a series of mono-/bitransition-metal-modified Si-pillared vermiculite catalysts, was adopted to transform disposable grocery bags (i.e.

Although an increasing body of evidence supports the crucial role of the SEC24 Homolog D, COPII Coat Complex Component (SEC24D) gene in the initiation and progression of cancer, a comprehensive pan-cancer analysis of this gene is still lacking. In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation of SEC24D, aiming to elucidate its potential role and underlying mechanisms across multiple human tumors. Our analysis relied on data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases.

Rapid progress in real-time measurement technology has uncovered varieties of transient pulse dynamics. Here, we report the vector nature of noise-like pulse (NLP) in a passive fiber laser based on the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) as the polarization independent saturable absorber. After achieving the basic operation regime of NLP, various types of vector pulses, namely, the polarization locked noise-like vector pulse (PLNLVP), the group velocity locked noise-like vector pulse (GVLNLVP), and the transitional state of combined characteristics of GVLNLVP and polarization rotation noise-like vector pulse (PRNLVP) are also obtained in the cavity.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported to be associated with hepatobiliary diseases. Previous observational and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have suggested a causal association between IBD and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). However, it is unclear whether IBD has a causal association with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC): another autoimmune liver disease.

Maternal separation (MS) is a type of early-life stress that has been linked to neuropsychiatric disorders, especially depression. Increasing evidence indicates that the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in the pathophysiology of depression. To investigate the potential relationship between ATP in PFC and antidepressant effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment, we assessed genes involved in ATP biosynthesis as well as the extracellular ATP levels in a rat model exposed to neonatal MS.

Consciousness arises from the spatiotemporal neural dynamics, however, its relationship with neural flexibility and regional specialization remains elusive. We identified a consciousness-related signature marked by shifting spontaneous fluctuations along a unimodal-transmodal cortical axis. This simple signature is sensitive to altered states of consciousness in single individuals, exhibiting abnormal elevation under psychedelics and in psychosis.

In order to obtain the leakage characteristics of an upstream pumping face seal with inclined ellipse dimples under high-temperature and high-speed liquid lubricating conditions, a thermo-hydrodynamic lubricating model is developed. The novelty of this model is that it takes the thermo-viscosity effect and cavitation effect into account. The influence of operating parameters, such as rotational speed, seal clearance, seal pressure, ambient temperature and structural parameters, such as dimple depth, inclination angle, slender ratio and dimple number on the opening force and leakage rate, is numerically calculated.

Context: In this study, the reactions of hydrated electron (e(aq)) with alkyl and aryl halides were simulated with an ab initial molecular dynamics (AIMD) method to reveal the underlying mechanism. An original protocol was developed for preparing the proper initial wavefunction guess of AIMD, in which a single electron was curled in a tetrahedral cavity of four water molecules. Our results show that the stability of e(aq) increases with the hydrogen bond grid integrity.
