[18F] fluoromisonidazole and [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in response evaluation after chemo-/radiotherapy of non-small-cell lung cancer: a feasibility study.

Background: Experimental and clinical evidence suggest that hypoxia in solid tumours reduces their sensitivity to conventional treatment modalities modulating response to ionizing radiation or chemotherapeutic agents. The aim of the present study was to show the feasibility of determining radiotherapeutically relevant hypoxia and early tumour response by ([18F] Fluoromisonidazole (FMISO) and [18F]-2-fluoro-2'-deoxyglucose (FDG) PET.

Methods: Eight patients with non-small-cell lung cancer underwent PET scans.

Background: The evaluation of hepatic size is a daily question in abdominal ultrasound, especially to determine the presence of hepatomegaly. In the literature, different methods of measurement are described, mostly as a subcostal measured organ diameter in one direction. This method has its limits in patients with obesity, accumulation of abdominal gas or in uncooperative patients (lack of coordinative respiration) so that alternative measurements are necessary.

Ascorbyl stearate inhibits cell proliferation and tumor growth in human ovarian carcinoma cells by targeting the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Ascorbyl stearate is a lipophilic, vitamin C derivative with antitumorigenic properties. The molecular mechanism(s) underlying the anticarcinogenic effect of this compound have not been well documented. The effect of ascorbyl stearate was studied in a panel of human ovarian epithelial cancer cells.

Intrapatient reproducibility of the BISxp monitor.

Background: The Bispectral Index (BIS) reportedly reflects anesthetic depth. It is recommended that anesthetic agents should be titrated to maintain the BIS between 40 and 60 arbitrary BIS units during anesthesia. For anesthesia providers to follow this recommendation, the monitor should be predictably affected by different anesthetic agents and have good interpatient and intrapatient reproducibility.

Synthesis, crystal structures, linear and nonlinear optical properties, and theoretical studies of (p-R-phenyl)-, (p-R-phenylethynyl)-, and (E)-[2-(p-R-phenyl)ethenyl]dimesitylboranes and related compounds.

The (p-R-phenyl)dimesitylboranes (R=Me(2)N, MeO, MeS, Br, I), (p-R-phenylethynyl)dimesitylboranes (R=Me(2)N, MeO, MeS, H), (E)-[2-(p-R-phenyl)ethenyl]dimesitylboranes (R=Me(2)N, H(2)N, MeO, MeS, H, CN, NO(2)), (E)-[2-(2-thienyl)ethenyl]dimesitylborane, and (E)-[2-(o-carboranyl)ethenyl]dimesitylborane have been prepared through the reaction of the appropriate p-R-phenyl- and p-R-phenylethynyllithium reagents with dimesitylboron fluoride and by hydroboration of the appropriate p-R-phenylacetylene, 2-ethynylthiophene, and o-ethynylcarborane with dimesitylborane. Their UV/Vis absorption and emission spectra have been recorded in a range of solvents with the fluorescence maxima of the donor-substituted compounds in particular exhibiting large bathochromic shifts in highly polar solvents, indicative of charge transfer leading to large dipole moments in the excited state. The molecular structures of the (p-R-phenyl)dimesitylboranes (R=Me(2)N, MeO, MeS, Br, I), the (E)-[2-(p-R-phenyl)ethenyl]dimesitylboranes (R=Me(2)N, H(2)N MeO, MeS, H), (p-R-phenylethynyl)dimesitylborane (R=Me(2)N), and (E)-[2-(2-thienyl)ethenyl]dimesitylborane, which have been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, offer evidence of increased conjugation in the ground state with increased donor strength of the R substituent.

Isolated retinal venous macroaneurysm.

Background: Unlike retinal arterial macroaneurysms, retinal venous macroaneurysms are rare. Retrospective studies have previously described venous macroaneurysms predominantly in association with branch retinal vein obstruction. Only 2 cases of isolated retinal venous macroaneurysm without venous occlusion have been described in the literature.

Differentiation-dependent expression and mitogenic action of interleukin-6 in human colon carcinoma cells: relevance for tumour progression.

Interleukin (IL)-6 mRNA expression in general is low in normal, adenomatous and cancerous human colon mucosa, except in rather undifferentiated lesions, in which IL-6 is overexpressed. Cytokeratin (CK) 8-positive carcinoma cells were identified by double immunostaining as almost exclusive source of IL-6. Likewise, in five (sub)clones of primary culture COGA-1 and COGA-13 human colon carcinoma cells, and in three established cell lines (Caco-2/AQ, Caco-2/15 and HT-29), efficient translation of IL-6 mRNA into protein was observed only in the least differentiated COGA-13 cells.

There is increasing clinical, immunologic, and pathophysiological consensus that allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are different manifestations of a single condition: inflammation of the upper and lower airways characterized by nasal and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Most patients with asthma have AR and asthma is present in a large percentage of patients with AR. Rhinitis is a major riskfactor for asthma.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in childhood brain tumors.

Overactivation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling has been recognized as an important step in the pathogenesis and progression of multiple forms of cancer of epithelial origin. Reports regarding EGFR family members in brain tumors are sparse and, thus, the significance of EGFR expression in childhood brain tumors is unclear. In this study, the expression of the EGFR family members was analyzed in 22 medulloblastomas.

A preference evaluation study comparing the sensory attributes of mometasone furoate and fluticasone propionate nasal sprays by patients with allergic rhinitis.

Objective: Data on intranasal corticosteroids suggest that individual product attributes may influence patient preference for therapy in allergic rhinitis. The study objective was to compare product sensory attributes and their impact upon patient preference for scent-free mometasone furoate nasal spray (MFNS) versus fluticasone propionate nasal spray (FPNS) in patients with symptomatic allergic rhinitis.

Methods: In a double-blind, crossover study, 100 patients were randomized to MFNS microg followed by FPNS 200 microg, or vice versa.

Quantification of left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction from gated 99mTc-MIBI SPECT: MRI validation and comparison of the Emory Cardiac Tool Box with QGS and 4D-MSPECT.

Unlabelled: The goal of this study was to validate the accuracy of the Emory Cardiac Tool Box (ECTB) in assessing left ventricular end-diastolic or end-systolic volume (EDV, ESV) and ejection fraction (LVEF) from gated (99m)Tc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile ((99m)Tc-MIBI) SPECT using cardiac MRI (cMRI) as a reference. Furthermore, software-specific characteristics of ECTB were analyzed in comparison with 4D-MSPECT and Quantitative Gated SPECT (QGS) results (all relative to cMRI).

Methods: Seventy patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease were examined using gated (99m)Tc-MIBI SPECT (8 gates/cardiac cycle) 60 min after tracer injection at rest.

Immunocytochemical detection of members of the caspase cascade of apoptosis in childhood medulloblastomas.

During the process of programmed cell death (PCD), the cell disintegrates into small, membrane-bound apoptotic bodies. Caspase-3 is ubiquitously expressed in normal and neoplastically-transformed human cells and serves as an executioner in the apoptotic or PCD pathway. During our immunocytochemical study, a sensitive, four-step, alkaline phosphatase-conjugated antigen detection technique was employed.

Effect of ciclesonide and fluticasone on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in adults with mild-to-moderate persistent asthma.

Background: Despite their proven efficacy in the treatment and prevention of asthma exacerbations, current inhaled corticosteroids carry safety concerns, especially adrenal suppression. Ciclesonide (hydrofluoroalkane propellant) is a novel inhaled corticosteroid with few, if any, clinical adverse events.

Objective: To evaluate the potential effects of ciclesonide therapy on the dynamic cortisol response to sequential low- and high-dose cosyntropin stimulation in adults with mild-to-moderate persistent asthma.

Strain rate analysis allows detection of differences in diastolic function between viable and nonviable myocardial segments.

Analysis of diastolic function for assessment of myocardial viability has not been evaluated. Strain rate (SR) analysis allows quantitative segmental analysis of myocardial function and has been used during dobutamine stimulation for assessment of systolic functional reserve. In 37 patients with ischemic left ventricular dysfunction diastolic function was evaluated at rest and during low-dose dobutamine stimulation (10 mug/kg/min) using SR imaging and related to F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

[Influence of blockades with local anesthetics on the stimulation ability of a nerve by peripheral nerve stimulation. Results of a randomized study].

In the present study we examined the influence of local anesthetics on the ability to stimulate a nerve by means of peripheral nerve stimulation. In 35 patients either 5 ml saline (group 1, n=18) or local anesthetics (group 2, n=17) were injected close to the sciatic nerve in a randomized and double-blind manner. The current needed to stimulate the nerve was measured 30 s and 2 min after injection.

Triamcinolone acetonide and fluticasone propionate nasal sprays provide comparable relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms regardless of disease severity.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of aqueous triamcinolone acetonide (TAA AQ) and fluticasone propionate (FP) nasal sprays on seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients stratified into cohorts based on symptom severity. In a multicenter, investigator-blinded, parallel-group study, 295 patients with a > or =2-year history of SAR received once-daily TAA AQ, 220 microg, or FP, 200 microg, for 3 weeks. Median baseline total nasal symptom score (TNSS; sum of nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal itching scores) for all patients was 8.

Survivin expression in childhood medulloblastomas: a possible diagnostic and prognostic marker.

Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis gene family that is expressed in embryonic tissues during human ontogenesis and most human malignancies, but it is not present in the majority of normal adult tissues. Survivin is also a chromosomal passenger protein required for physiological cell divison. Survivin blocks apoptosis, via its BIR domain, by either directly or indirectly blocking the function of the members of the caspase cascade.

Virtual Excitation and Multiple Scattering Correction Terms to the Neutron Index of Refraction for Hydrogen.

The neutron index of refraction is generally derived theoretically in the Fermi approximation. However, the Fermi approximation neglects the effects of the binding of the nuclei of a material as well as multiple scattering. Calculations by Nowak introduced correction terms to the neutron index of refraction that are quadratic in the scattering length and of order 10(-3) fm for hydrogen and deuterium.

Prone versus supine patient positioning during gated 99mTc-sestamibi SPECT: effect on left ventricular volumes, ejection fraction, and heart rate.

Unlabelled: Gated myocardial perfusion SPECT allows assessment of left ventricular end-diastolic volume (EDV), left ventricular end-systolic volume (ESV), left ventricular stroke volume (SV), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Acquiring images with the patient both prone and supine is an approved method of identifying and reducing artifacts. Yet prone positioning alters physiologic conditions.
