Background: Central pain, characterized by neuropathic pain, can manifest due to injury to the superior spinothalamic tract. The brainstem includes sensory and motor pathways as well as nuclei of the cranial nerves, and therefore cancer metastasis in the region requires early intervention. Although stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is commonly employed for the treatment of brain metastasis, it poses risks of late complications like radiation necrosis (RN).

  • Integrated kidney care connects preventative measures for chronic kidney disease with health services for those already affected, focusing on smooth transitions between different stages of the disease and treatment options.

  • A 53-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer developed nephrotic syndrome and renal failure after receiving long-term pamidronate treatment for bone metastases over 5 years.
  • A renal biopsy showed damage consistent with collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and tubulointerstitial injury.
  • Despite stopping pamidronate, her kidney function worsened, leading to palliative care and her passing 96 days later, highlighting the need for further research on the effects of pamidronate on kidney health.
