BACKGROUND Common causes of severely elevated transaminases, especially alanine transaminase, due to liver diseases include drug-induced liver injury and acute viral hepatitis, especially hepatitis E, which can present similarly in clinical practice. Broad differential diagnostic workup in patients with elevated transaminases is required to not overlook the possibility of hepatitis E infection. CASE REPORT We report on a 65-year-old asymptomatic man who was referred to the Emergency Department from the rehabilitation center due to markedly elevated liver transaminases.

We established a new study algorithm named NOVA - Novel Organism Verification and Analysis to systematically analyze bacterial isolates that cannot be characterized by conventional identification procedures MALDI-TOF MS and partial 16 S rRNA gene sequencing using Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
Results: We identified a total of 35 bacterial strains that represent potentially novel species.

Background: The increasing incidence of candidemia and emergence of drug-resistant species are major concerns worldwide. Long-term surveillance studies are needed.
Methods: The Fungal Infection Network of Switzerland (FUNGINOS) conducted a 15-year (2004-2018), nationwide, epidemiological study of candidemia.
Aims: The aim of this study was to analyse the demographics, risk factors and in-hospital mortality rates of patients admitted with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to a tertiary care hospital in Switzerland.
Methods: In this single-centre retrospective cohort study at the University Hospital Basel, we included all patients with confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection hospitalised from 27 February 2020 to 10 May 2021. Patients’ characteristics were extracted from the electronic medical record system.
