Article Synopsis
  • - Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal commonly found in soil that negatively affects both plants and humans, making its resistance in soil microorganisms crucial for managing pollution, particularly with organic fertilizers.
  • - A study in Changzhou, Shanggao, and Fuzhou examined how inorganic and organic fertilizers influence Cd resistance genes in soil, revealing that soils with organic fertilizer had significantly lower available Cd and higher abundance of Cd resistance genes compared to those with inorganic fertilizer.
  • - Environmental factors like pH, moisture content, and ammonium nitrogen were identified as key influences on the distribution of Cd-resistant microorganisms, suggesting that organic fertilizers not only enhance microbial resistance to Cd but also foster beneficial interactions among these microorganisms.

Foaming caused by filamentous bacteria in activated sludge (AS) is a common phenomenon in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Taihu Lake Basin of South China. In this study, total bacterial and filamentous bacterial communities were comprehensively characterized in AS and foams from eight municipal WWTPs by high-throughput sequencing technology. Results showed that alpha diversities of total bacterial communities in foams were obviously lower than those in AS samples.
