Nerve growth factor (NGF) is of major importance for the survival, development and maintenance of peripheral sympathetic and central neuronal tissue. Most of the cellular effects are mediated by binding to their high-affinity receptor c-TRK, a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase.
