Recent studies have revealed that biotic interactions in ecological communities vary over time, possibly mediating community responses to anthropogenic disturbances. This study investigated the heterogeneity of such variability within a real community and its impact on population stability in the face of pesticide application, particularly focusing on density-dependence of the interaction effect. Using outdoor mesocosms with a freshwater community, we found considerable heterogeneity in density-dependent interaction variability among links in the same community.

Article Synopsis
  • Neoadjuvant treatment with microtubule inhibitors (MTIs) for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is not well understood, prompting a study that analyzed tumor samples to correlate genetic mutations with treatment response.
  • The study found that tumors with high homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) and specific mutations (like BRCA2) had higher rates of complete response to MTIs like eribulin and paclitaxel.
  • Transcriptomic profiling highlighted FGFR2 downregulation as a critical gene linked to treatment response and identified a significant pathway (glycan degradation) that could influence resistance to these therapies in TNBC patients.*

In summer, the survival zones of cold-water species are predicted to narrow by both increasing water temperatures from the surface and by expanding hypoxic zones from the lake bottom. To examine how the abundance of cold-water fishes changes along environmental gradients, we assessed the vertical environmental DNA (eDNA) distributions of three salmonid species which may have different water temperature tolerances during both stratification and turnover periods using quantitative PCR (qPCR). In addition, we examined on the vertical distribution of diverse fish fauna using an eDNA metabarcoding assay.

Systemic insecticides are one of the causes of Odonata declines in paddy fields. Since rising temperatures associated with global warming can contribute to strengthen pesticide toxicity, insecticide exposures under increasing temperatures may accelerate the decline of Odonata species in the future. However, the combined effects of multiple stressors on Odonata diversity and abundance within ecosystems under various environmental conditions and species interactions are little known.

Anthropogenic noise is ubiquitous globally. However, we know little about how the impacts of noise alter fundamental ecosystem properties, such as resource consumption by invertebrate consumers. Using experimental noise manipulation and faecal DNA metabarcoding, we assessed how the direct and cross-trophic indirect effects of noise altered the dietary richness and specializations of omnivorous grasshoppers in a grassland ecosystem.

As interest in natural capital grows and society increasingly recognizes the value of biodiversity, we must discuss how ecosystem observations to detect changes in biodiversity can be sustained through collaboration across regions and sectors. However, there are many barriers to establishing and sustaining large-scale, fine-resolution ecosystem observations. First, comprehensive monitoring data on both biodiversity and possible anthropogenic factors are lacking.

Assessing the vulnerability and adaptive capacity of species, communities, and ecosystems is essential for successful conservation. Climate change, however, induces extreme uncertainty in various pathways of assessments, which hampers robust decision-making for conservation. Here, we developed a framework that allows us to quantify the level of acceptable uncertainty as a metric of ecosystem robustness, considering the uncertainty due to climate change.

Background/aim: The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) obtained using F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) is presumed to indicate tumor and active immune cells in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) based on their glycolysis activity. Therefore, this study investigated whether the metabolic parameter SUVmax could provide information regarding TIME in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients.

Patients And Methods: Fifty-four patients with TNBC underwent FDG PET/CT before neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Purpose: Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are known to predict the therapeutic effect in breast cancer. Although a preoperative tissue biopsy can be used to evaluate TILs, TILs that are heterogeneously distributed might require examination of all preoperative tissue biopsy samples. We have recently reported that the TIL ultrasonography (US) score, as determined by characteristic US findings, provides excellent predictive performance for lymphocyte predominant breast cancer (LPBC).

Article Synopsis
  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is complex, displaying various biological characteristics, and a study called Japan Breast Cancer Research Group 22 is exploring how TNBC responds to different chemotherapy treatments based on its homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) status.
  • The study involved patients under 65 with either high HRD or specific gene mutations, who received randomized chemotherapy regimens, with treatment effectiveness measured by the absence of residual cancer cells post-therapy.
  • Results from 66 samples showed that smaller tumors had more CD8 T cells, while higher densities of CD4 T cells were linked to complete pathological responses, suggesting that these immune cells could predict treatment outcomes regardless of other genetic factors.
