(1) : The incidence of congenital cholesteatoma (CC) has rarely been discussed, particularly from a demographic viewpoint. Therefore, we conducted an epidemiological study of CC using local medical characteristics. (2) : The participants were 100 patients (101 ears) who underwent initial surgical treatment at university hospitals in two rural prefectures between 2006 and 2022.

Effect of fentanyl constant-rate infusions with or without medetomidine on the minimum infusion rate of propofol required to prevent motor movement in dogs.

Propofol is a potential injectable anesthetic agent used in total intravenous anesthesia. However, the sparing effect of fentanyl and medetomidine on the required propofol dose in dogs remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of fentanyl constant-rate infusion (CRI) with or without medetomidine on the minimum infusion rate of propofol required to prevent motor movement (MIR) in dogs.

Impact of IL-17-producing γδ T cells on chronic otitis media induced by nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae in a mouse model.

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is considered a major pathogen underlying middle ear infection. This study aimed to investigate the impact of IL-17 on chronic otitis media (COM) induced by NTHi in mice. NTHi was inoculated into the tympanic bulla with eustachian tubal obstruction.

Epidemiologic, clinical, and genetic characteristics of influenza C virus infections among outpatients and inpatients in Sendai, Japan from 2006 to 2020.

Background: Influenza C virus is a pathogen that causes acute respiratory illness in children. The clinical information about this virus is limited because of the small number of isolated viruses compared to influenza A or B viruses.

Methods: A total of 60 influenza C viruses were isolated by clinical tests using cell culture methods conducted in one hospital and one clinic during the 15 years from 2006 to 2020.

[Traumatic Neuroma Mimicking Lymph Node Metastasis of Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Developed after Pancreatoduodenectomy-A Case Report].

A traumatic neuroma is a benign tumor consisting of a non-neoplastic growth of injured nerves as a result of trauma or surgery. It is rarely found in an abdominal cavity, but some reports showed that it occurred around the bile duct. We report a case of a 72-year-old man who underwent subtotal stomach-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms 4 years ago.

Platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) hydrolyzes an acetyl ester at the sn-2 position of platelet-activating factor (PAF), thereby mediating a variety of biological functions. PAF-AH is found in three isoforms: Type I PAF-AH (PAF-AH I) and Type II PAF-AH (PAF-AH II) are intracellular enzymes whereas plasma PAF-AH is characterized by association with lipoprotein in plasma. PAF-AH I forms a tetramer constituted by two catalytic subunits (α1 and α2) with β regulatory subunits.

Current approaches and questions yet to be resolved for the prophylaxis of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis.

Prophylaxis is important for post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP), which is the most common and serious complication of ERCP. Although the current guidelines include independent patient- and procedure-related risk factors for PEP and available PEP prophylactic measures, the synergistic effect of these risk factors on PEP should also be considered, given that patients often harbor multiple risk factors. Furthermore, a combination of prophylactic measures is often selected in clinical practice.

[A case of rectovaginal metastasis 6 years after initial resection of extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor of vulvar origin].

A 53-year-old woman who had undergone excision of KIT-positive extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumor (EGIST) of the vulva 6 years ago presented to our hospital due to a positive fecal occult blood test. Colonoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor in the rectum ventral side. In addition, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor in the rectovaginal septum.

Application of Mass Spectrometry for Determining the Geographic Production Area of Wagyu Beef.

Japanese Black cattle (Japanese Wagyu) beef is attracting attention for its aroma and marbling, and its handling is increasing worldwide. Here, we focused on the origin discrimination of Wagyu beef and analyzed the nutritional components of Japanese Wagyu (produced in multiple prefectures of Japan), Hybrid Wagyu (a cross between Angus and Wagyu cattle born in Australia and transported to Japan), and Australian Wagyu beef using mass spectrometry (MS). Triple-quadrupole liquid chromatography-MS was used to clarify the molecular species of lipids in Wagyu beef.

Adult-onset Langerhans cell histiocytosis changing CNS lesion from pituitary to suprasellar extension.

Summary: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterized by the proliferation of abnormal Langerhans cells in various tissues and organs, including bone, skin, the lungs, and the pituitary gland. Hypothalamic-pituitary lesions in LCH often cause central diabetes insipidus (CDI), but the natural course of LCH in the CNS remains to be elucidated. In this study, we report an interesting case of altered LCH lesions in the CNS from the pituitary to the hypothalamus in a 45-year-old woman.

A novel view of computed tomography images similar to the visual field of otologic surgeons.

Objectives: In preparation for endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), the most important computed tomography (CT) image for otolaryngologists is the coronal plane image because it has a viewpoint similar to that of the surgical visual field. Contrastingly, otologic surgeons refer to axial and coronal plane images before ear surgery and must imagine the anatomical structure of the temporal bone by reconstructing three-dimensional (3D) images in their minds. We propose a "surgical position view (SPV) image," a novel viewpoint of CT images that enables otologic surgeons to see a perspective similar to the surgical visual field.

Growth Kinetics of Influenza C Virus Antigenic Mutants That Escaped from Anti-Hemagglutinin Esterase Monoclonal Antibodies and Viral Antigenic Changes Found in Field Isolates.

The antigenicity of the hemagglutinin esterase (HE) glycoprotein of influenza C virus is known to be stable; however, information about residues related to antigenic changes has not yet been fully acquired. Using selection with anti-HE monoclonal antibodies, we previously obtained some escape mutants and identified four antigenic sites, namely, A-1, A-2, A-3, and Y-1. To confirm whether the residues identified as the neutralizing epitope possibly relate to the antigenic drift, we analyzed the growth kinetics of these mutants.

Shadow pitching deviates ball release position: kinematic analysis in high school baseball pitchers.

Background: Although shadow pitching, commonly called "towel drill," is recommended to improve the throwing motion for the rehabilitation of pitching disorders before the initiation of a throwing program aimed at returning to throwing using a ball, the motion differs from that of normal throwing. Learning improper motion during ball release (BR) may increase shoulder joint forces. Abnormal throwing biomechanics leads to injures.

AdipoR agonist increases insulin sensitivity and exercise endurance in AdipoR-humanized mice.

Adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 exert anti-diabetic effects. Although muscle-specific disruption of AdipoR1 has been shown to result in decreased insulin sensitivity and decreased exercise endurance, it remains to be determined whether upregulation of AdipoR1 could reverse them in obese diabetic mice. Here, we show that muscle-specific expression of human AdipoR1 increased expression levels of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative stress-detoxification to almost the same extents as treadmill exercise, and concomitantly increased insulin sensitivity and exercise endurance in obese diabetic mice.

Evaluation of the lifetime brain/central nervous system cancer risk associated with childhood head CT scanning in Japan.

The use of computed tomography (CT) scanning has increased worldwide over the decades, and Japan is one of the leading countries in annual frequency of diagnostic CT. Although benefits of CT scan are undisputable, concerns have been raised about potential health effects of ionizing radiation exposure from CT, particularly among children who are likely more susceptible to radiation than adults. Our study aims to evaluate the cumulated lifetime risk of the brain/central nervous system (CNS) cancer due to head CT examinations performed on Japanese children at age 0 to 10 years in 2012, 2015 and 2018.

Influence of the Retrocolic Versus Antecolic Route for Alimentary Tract Reconstruction on Delayed Gastric Emptying After Pancreatoduodenectomy: A Multicenter, Noninferiority Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: This study aimed to determine whether retrocolic alimentary tract reconstruction is noninferior to antecolic reconstruction in terms of DGE incidence after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and investigated patients' postoperative nutritional status.

Methods: Patients from 9 participating institutions scheduled for PD were randomly allocated to the retrocolic or antecolic reconstruction groups.

Objectives: Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a chief pathogen in both acute otitis media and otitis media with effusion. Phosphorylcholine (ChoP) is expressed on lipooligosaccharides, and ChoP has phase variation, which is related to its adhesion to and invasion of epithelial cells in the upper airway. However, little is known about the role of ChoP expression.
