Introduction: The issue of whether integrase inhibitors (INSTIs) may confer a higher risk of paradoxical tuberculosis-related immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) compared with other classes of antiretroviral in people with HIV with a profound level of immunosuppression remains insufficiently explored. We aimed to assess whether such a higher risk exists by examining a cohort of patients with TB-HIV initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Hong Kong.

Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a first-line antimalarial drug, has demonstrated great anticancer effects in many types of tumors, including liver cancer, glioblastoma, and pancreatic cancer. Due to its abilities to induce programmed cell death (PCD; apoptosis, autophagy and ferroptosis), inhibit tumor metastasis and angiogenesis, and modulate the tumor microenvironment, DHA could become an antineoplastic agent in the foreseeable future. However, the therapeutic efficacy of DHA is compromised owing to its inherent disadvantages, including poor stability, low aqueous solubility, and short plasma half-life.

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) constitute a unique group at higher risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection. Gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis plays key roles in aggravating Parkinson's disease (PD) and discovery of agents targeting GM may open new avenues for PD therapy. This study aims to investigate the potentially neuroprotective effects and underlying mechanisms of polymannuronic acid (PM) or Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), or their combination in a chronic PD mice model. Our results found oral administration of prebiotic PM or LGG separately or in combination for 5 weeks could prevent dopaminergic neuronal loss via improving reduced walking distance and activity or weakened muscle strength in behavior tests by enhancing tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene and/or protein expressions in the midbrain and striatum of PD mice.

Artesunate (AS), the first-line treatment of malaria with a satisfactory safety profile, has been repurposed as a potential anticancer candidate as it mainly generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) through its intrinsic endoperoxide bridge reacting with ferrous-based catalysts to suppress cancer cell growth. However, further clinical translation of AS is hindered by the attenuated anticancer efficacy due to insufficient ROS generation. Herein, we rationally integrated hydrophobic-modified AS (hAS) with biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) and biomineral calcium carbonate to fabricate high AS-loaded nanomedicine (Ca-PDA/hAS@PEG) for cancer chemo-photothermal therapy, which exerted anticancer effects in the following ways: (1) the heat was generated when PDA was irradiated by near-infrared (NIR) light for photothermal therapy.

To identify the risk factors associated with anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury (AT-DILI) or abnormal living functioning from 757 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) registered at Nanshan Center for Chronic Disease Control (Nanshan CCDC), Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. We identified 757 TB patients who met our inclusion criteria by screening the Hospital Information System (HIS) at Nanshan CCDC. Next, we identified positive cases of AT-DILI or abnormal liver functioning based on results of the first-time liver function tests (LFTs) after taking anti-TB drugs.
