International comparison of the community prevalence of symptoms of prostatism in four countries.

We conducted an international comparison of the prevalence of urinary symptoms of prostatism in 4 countries, using a community-based random sampling of subjects, similar study procedures, and a single definition of cases that was based on a standardized symptom questionnaire. In Scotland 1,994 medically eligible men aged 40-79 years agreed to participate from 3 communities of the Forth Valley. In France, a nation-wide survey was conducted cross-sectionally in a representative sample of 2,011 French men aged 50-84 years.

In vivo microdialysis was employed to measure the extracellular concentrations of dopamine (DA) in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) of rats during male sexual activity to look for a correlation with sexual activity. During copulation, the concentration of DA in the MPOA was significantly increased. A significant difference was detected in changes of DA between copulators and non-copulators.

Prevalence of prostatism in Japanese men in a community-based study with comparison to a similar American study.

Purpose: We estimate the prevalence of urinary symptoms in Japanese men.

Materials And Methods: A total of 289 eligible residents 40 to 79 years old completed a questionnaire with questions worded similarly to those of the international prostate symptom score (response rate 42%).

Results: The ratio of moderate-to-severe symptoms was 41%, 29%, 31% and 56% for each age decade from ages 40 to 79 years, respectively, after adjusting for nonresponse.

We investigated spermatogenic damage induced by anti-cancer agents in previous studies. The results showed that the damage to spermatogenesis induced by anti-cancer agents could be due to not only direct damaging effects on DNA synthesis but also a direct effect on Sertoli cell function. Thus, stimulating Sertoli cell function could protect against the damaging effects of anti-cancer agents on spermatogenesis, or stimulate recovery from impair spermatogenesis.

The nominal probability coefficients for individual tissues and organs by age and gender are calculated with data used in the ICRP publication 60. The purpose is to calculate the projected number of untimely deaths in a group of patients that has a different age distribution than the general population for the barium meal examination in Japan. These coefficients were designed to give the same overall detriment as those calculated in ICRP 60, which were for the average general population.

A rare case of disseminated intravascular coagulation caused by the nonionic contrast medium iohexol.

Nonionic contrast media are reported to cause serious adverse reactions less often than ionic contrast media. However, we treated an otherwise healthy woman with a left ureteral stone in whom disseminated intravascular coagulation developed due to intravenous administration of the nonionic contrast medium iohexol. We discuss the clinical course and possible causes of disseminated intravascular coagulation.

We clinically evaluated the efficacy of neoadjuvant M-VAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin and cisplatin) therapy followed by radical cystectomy. A total of 21 patients with locally invasive bladder cancer received neoadjuvant M-VAC therapy with an average of 2.4 courses (range 2-4).
