It was shown that bacteriophage tf as well as bacteriophages phi p4/40, phi p25/42, phi p23/40 and phi p6/40, which are specific to different P. putida strains, contain the single strand breaks in their DNA. The breaks are localized in one strand of DNA molecules and are repairable with T4 DNA ligase.

Two derivatives of D3112 prophage with large internal deletions (mini-D3112) have been constructed. Mini-D3112 delta H is about 3.5 kb long, containing the repressor c1 gene.

We have found an inhibiting effect of hybrid RP4::D3112 plasmid (where D3112 is represented as genome of a transposable phage specific for Pseudomonas aeruginosa) on the development of temperate P. putida phage PP56. The study of the effect has revealed a previously unknown locus (in the region 12-14.

The possibility of using a model system (which included RP4::Mu plasmid and D3112 phage in Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells) for analysis of compatibility of transposable Escherichia coli phage Mu and P. aeruginosa phage D3112, as phages and transposons, was studied. No interaction was observed during the vegetative growth of phages.

Two temperate bacteriophages, PP56 and PP71, specific for bacteria of Pseudomonas putida strain PpG1 have been isolated for the first time. Characterization of the phages was performed. Both of them accomplish stable lysogenization of P.

The post-mastectomy syndrome in 151 patients was investigated by direct lymphography with intra-operative determination of endolymphatic pressure and lymph node biopsy in 42 cases. Results allowed classification into 4 groups as a function of course of lymphatic lesions and selection of patients for either bypass or resection surgery.

An analysis of the course of the acute period of subarachnoidal hemorrhages has shown that in 26.5% of cases there were repeated hemorrhages, the mortality rate of such patients being 69.3%.

More than 500 cases of lymphatic edema of the limbs due to various etiologies have been seen since 1979. 478 surgical procedures have been carried out in 407 of them, including 267 lymphovenous anastomoses. Early and long-term positive results were obtained in 85% and 70% of cases respectively.

In the period of circulation of influenza A (H3N2) virus, 1969-1983, we examined virologically the autopsy specimens from 69 adults who died of influenza and its complications. Immunofluorescence examinations of organ impressions and infected cultures as well as virus isolations were used for postmortem laboratory diagnosis. Influenza viruses were isolated postmortem in all age groups, predominantly in older subjects (over 60), both in cases of early and late (after 7 days) deaths.

The results of long-term (1 to 6 years) follow-up of 43 patients operated on for vasorenal hypertension were compared to preoperative data. The predictive value of the duration of arterial hypertension, patient's age, plasma renin activity coefficient and quantitative intrarenal flow data obtained at angiography with a simultaneous droperidol test, was determined. Intrarenal flow of the contralateral kidney was shown to be the most valuable predictive parameter for the prognosis of the hypotensive effect of the operation.

Distinct increase in content of lysophosphatidyl choline, dehydrocholesterol, decrease in concentration of phosphatidyl ethanolamine simultaneously with high level of diene conjugates and Schiff bases were found in children with hormone-resistant form of nephrotic glomerulonephritis as compared with children suffering from a hormone-dependent form of the disease. Peroxidation of membrane lipids appears to cause a destabilization of cell membranes, which is responsible for development of hormone-resistance.

Replantation in the lower leg, although technically feasible, still remains a complicated clinical issue in terms of the decision-making process. In children, a limb salvage or replant procedure would seem preferable; however, in crush amputations from railroad injury, a very severe trauma, difficulties in treatment should be thoroughly weighed against prosthetic possibilities: for example, only a fair or good functional outcome would justify an attempt to replant a severed shin. Unfortunately, the outcome in most cases is unpredictable at the time of initial evaluation, and even during the replantation procedure itself.

Advantages of stepwise surgical correction are illustrated by a review of late results of surgical treatment for arterial hypertension due to bilateral vascular lesions or heterolateral combinations of vascular and parenchymatous renal disorders. The procedure yields better results, so that repeated surgery on the contralateral side may be avoided or postponed until the next relapse of hypertension in some patients. The timing of the contralateral operation in the context of stepwise treatment depends on hypotensive effect of the first correction that is conditioned by the state of terminal arterial bed, and the interstitium of both kidneys.

The results of clipping of an aneurysm in the acute period of subarachnoid hemorrhage are analysed. It is shown that vascular spasm is an increased risk factor if it involves up to 3-4 and more arterial basal segments and is attended by marked general cerebral and focal neurological symptomatology and gross disorders of cerebral function. Such vascular spasm is unfavourable from the standpoint of prognosis in determining the outcomes of the operation.

The authors determined the levels of lipoperoxides and activities of endogenic phospholipases in red cell membranes and cerebrospinal fluid in 101 patients with ischemic and 35 patients with hemorrhagic strokes. The authors established increases in the activities of endogenic phospholipases and of processes of peroxidation of membrane lipids which correlated with the severity and outcome of cerebral strokes. It has been proved that the parameters of activity of membrane destructive processes may serve as criteria characterizing the severity and predicting the outcome of acute cerebral circulation impairments.
