The 283,757-bp double-stranded DNA genome of Pseudomonas fluorescens phage OBP shares a general genomic organization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa phage EL. Comparison of this genomic organization, assembled in syntenic genomic blocks interspersed with hyperplastic regions of the ΦKZ-related phages, supports the proposed division in the "EL-like viruses," and the "phiKZ-like viruses" within a larger subfamily. Identification of putative early transcription promoters scattered throughout the hyperplastic regions explains several features of the ΦKZ-related genome organization (existence of genomic islands) and evolution (multi-inversion in hyperplastic regions).

The extracellular domain of Notch contains epidermal growth factor (EGF) repeats that are extensively modified with different O-linked glycans. O-Fucosylation is essential for receptor function, and elongation with N-acetylglucosamine, catalyzed by members of the Fringe family, modulates Notch activity. Only recently, genes encoding enzymes involved in the O-glucosylation pathway have been cloned.

The aim of the study is to analyze sepsis and septic shock incidence and their influence on the outcome in critically ill patients with intracranial hemorrhage. Sepsis incidence (33,7%) and septic shock incidence (18,6%) in the patients studied did not depend on intracranial hemorrhage etiology. Septic complications led to higher mortality which was 22,8% in patients with sepsis and 74,4% in patients with septic shock.

The study focuses on hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) influence on the intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with intracranial hemorrhages. Forty eight hyperbaric oxygenation sessions in 21 mechanically ventilated patients with intracranial hemorrhages were analyzed. HBO was accompanied by ICP increase in 31,3% of cases.

The genome of halo-forming temperate Pseudomonas aeruginosa phage phi297 and lytic activity of its virulent mutant were studied. A mosaic structure was revealed for phi297 genome by its complete sequencing. The phi97 genome was partly homologous to the genomes of phages D3 and F116.

(Bacterio)phage PVP-SE1, isolated from a German wastewater plant, presents a high potential value as a biocontrol agent and as a diagnostic tool, even compared to the well-studied typing phage Felix 01, due to its broad lytic spectrum against different Salmonella strains. Sequence analysis of its genome (145,964 bp) shows it to be terminally redundant and circularly permuted. Its G+C content, 45.

Cranioorbital injuries (COI) are combined with brain trauma in 45-53% of patients and in 21--24% of cases require surgical treatment. Aim of this study was to evaluate the results of surgical treatment of patients with COI in acute period of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Among 4078 patients with TBI admitted to neurosurgical department of Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine, 428 (10,5%) had COI.

The present study was designed to extensively characterize cell lines derived from porcine blastocysts by several methodical approaches, including morphological observation, cytogenetic analysis, estimation of alkaline phosphatase activity and detection of specific marker expression at the mRNA/protein level. A comparison was made between the properties of cell lines isolated from in vivo- and in vitro-obtained blastocysts. Our results showed that 57.

The paper describes the results of experimental measurements of point mobility carried out on circular plates containing tapered holes of quadratic power-law profile with attached damping layers. The obtained results are compared to the developed numerical model, as a means of validation. The profiles of the tapered hole in the plates are designed to replicate near zero reflection of quasi-plane waves from a tapered hole in geometrical acoustics approximation, also known as acoustic black hole effect.

Formation of a protected biofilm environment is recognized as one of the major causes of the increasing antibiotic resistance development and emphasizes the need to develop alternative antibacterial strategies, like phage therapy. This study investigates the in vitro degradation of single-species Pseudomonas putida biofilms, PpG1 and RD5PR2, by the novel phage ϕ15, a 'T7-like virus' with a virion-associated exopolysaccharide (EPS) depolymerase. Phage ϕ15 forms plaques surrounded by growing opaque halo zones, indicative for EPS degradation, on seven out of 53 P.

The article continues a study of pseudolysogeny in Pseudominas aeruginosa infected with phiKZ-like phages of the EL species. Analysis was performed for several newly isolated virulent mutants of EL phages (EL and RU) that were virulent (capable of causing lysis of bacteria infected with the wild-type phage) and a lower extent of opalescence of negative colonies (NCs). Wile-type recombinants were detected in crosses of virulent mutants of phages EL and RU to confirm the polygenic control of virulence.

The properties of new virulent bacteriophage TL of Pseudomonas aeruginosa belonging to the family Podoviridae (genome size of 46 kb) were investigated. This bacteriophage is capable of lysogenizing the bacterial lawn in halo zones around negative colonies (NC) of other bacteriophages. TL forms large NC, that are hardly distinguishable on the lawn of P.

Clinical and experimental studies were under way to examine nonspecific adaptive reactions of blood in chronic brain ischemia. The electrophoretic mobility of red blood cells and differential blood count were studied in animals (rats) when simulating local and total brain ischemia, as well as in patients with stages I, II, and III dyscirculatory encephalopathy. General mechanisms responsible for changing the adaptive reactions of blood were found in varying chronic brain ischemia in the experiments and clinical observations.

The synthesis of per-O-sulfated derivatives of di-, tetra-, hexa-, octa-, dodeca-, and hexadecafucosides related to natural fucoidans of different types has been performed with the use of previously reported acid-promoted protocol for per-O-sulfation of polyols by SO(3) complexes. During the treatment of (1→3)-linked oligofucosides under these conditions with the promotion by TfOH, the unusual rearrangement of the reducing pyranose residue into furanose one was observed. To avoid the formation of rearrangement by-products, the use of a series of strong acids as promoters of sulfation of large oligofucosides was studied and the improved protocol was developed based on the use of TFA instead of TfOH.

The prospective study of plasma S100β protein levels in 19 patients with mild traumamic brain injury treated with conservative methods was carried out. The S100β protein levels were measured on the admission of the patient and after 24 and 48 h. The level of S100β increased above normal values (>0,105 mkg/l) in 11 patients (58%) in the first 6 h after the trauma.

The highly repetitive nature of the Trichomonas vaginalis genome and massive expansion of various gene families has caused difficulties in genome assembly and has hampered genome mapping. Here, we adapted fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for T. vaginalis, which is sensitive enough to detect single copy genes on metaphase chromosomes.

The effect of a model of the H-component of a typical magnetic storm on the early ontogenesis of Daphnia magna Straus at 21 and 23 degrees C has been studied. It was shown based on the rates of the early ontogenesis that the effects of the model magnetic storm from the sudden onset of the storm to its end differ from the effects of the model magnetic storm from the recovery phase to the end of the storm. The effects of the model magnetic storm depended on temperature.

We report the selection and amplification of the broad-host-range Salmonella phage phi PVP-SE1 in an alternative nonpathogenic host. The lytic spectrum and the phage DNA restriction profile were not modified upon replication in Escherichia coli Bl21, suggesting the possibility of producing this phage in a nonpathogenic host, contributing to the safety and easier approval of a product based on this Salmonella biocontrol agent.
