In critically ill patients, compromised microcirculation causes tissue hypoxia, organ failure, and death. These pathophysiological processes occur particularly in patients with high illness severity, so reliable hypoxia biomarkers should reflect this in their occurrence. This secondary analysis of a prospective study categorized patients by their burden of organ dysfunction (BOD) using the cohort's median initial sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score of 8 as a cutoff.

Background: The prevalence of diabetes has been increasing in Aotearoa New Zealand by approximately 7% per year, and is three times higher among Māori and Pacific peoples than in Europeans. The depth of the diabetes epidemic, and the expansive breadth of services required for its management, elevate the need for high-quality evidence on the projected future burden of this complex disease.

Methods: In this manuscript we have projected the prevalence of diabetes (type 1 and type 2 combined) out to 2040-2044 using age-period-cohort modelling.

Herein, we simultaneously synthesized three different double B←N Lewis pair-functionalized naphthalenes including the asymmetric BNNY and BNNO and the mirror-symmetric BNNR, via a one-pot method. The annulation modes of the B←N Lewis pairs and the substituents on the boron atoms efficiently tune the molecular frontier orbitals and emission colors. α-Position fusion leads to a significant enhancement of the HOMO energy level and a decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap, while the electron-withdrawing groups attached to the boron atom make the LUMO energy level more stable.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation is a chronic vascular pathology characterized by inflammation, leukocyte infiltration, and vascular remodeling. The aim of this study was to delineate the protective role of Resolvin D2 (RvD2), a bioactive isoform of specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators, via G-protein-coupled receptor 18 (GPR18) receptor signaling in attenuating AAAs. Importantly, RvD2 and GPR18 levels were significantly decreased in aortic tissue of AAA patients compared with controls.

Here, we provide evidence for the first observed case of facultative parthenogenesis in a captive Jamaican boa (Chilabothrus subflavus). Background: Following a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. He Rourou Whai Painga is a dietary intervention trial with behaviour change support that seeks to determine whether a MedDiet pattern can provide equivalent benefits in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), a country where cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death.
