Between March 2008 and March 2011, hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomles were performed on 70 patients. Following the first 26 cases undertaken based on guidelines in the literature, we modified the procedure to avoid barotrauma to the kidney caused by the usual 12-13 mm Hg CO(2) pneumoperitoneum or pneumoretroperitoneum. The perirenal CO(2) pressure, therefore, was decreased to 8 mm Hg from the beginning of the surgery; the operation was performed without using a handport.

Luciferase immunoprecipitation systems were used to evaluate antiviral antibodies in four 23-person groups: healthy blood donors and HIV-infected patients with oral hairy leukoplakia (OLP), Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), or non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Objectives: In this study, the distribution of human rotavirus G and P types in Hungary is reported. In addition, the VP4 and VP7 genes of G1P[8] strains were sequenced to monitor if vaccine-derived strains were introduced and/or some strains/lineages were selected against.
Background: Our aim was to investigate the presence of free cancer cells found in lavage cytology specimens taken from the proximity of tumors during the course of curative open and laparoscopic colorectal resections and then examine and compare the long-term disease outcomes in cases of negative and positive cytology. Based on the results, we were hoping to identify the place of peritumoral lavage cytology among prognostic factors for disease recurrence.
Methods: Between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2007 intraoperative peritoneal lavage cytology was performed in 145 patients who underwent curative colorectal procedures.

β-Arrestins were initially discovered as negative regulators of G protein-coupled receptor signaling. Although β-arrestins have more recently been implicated as scaffold proteins that interact with various mitogenic and developmental signals, the genetic role of β-arrestins in driving oncogenesis is not known. Here we have investigated the role of β-arrestin in hematologic malignancies and have found that although both β-arrestin1 and -2 are expressed in the hematopoietic system, loss of β-arrestin2 preferentially leads to a severe impairment in the establishment and propagation of the chronic and blast crisis phases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Background: There have been numerous reports of clustered outbreaks of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) at renal transplant centers over the past 2 decades. It has been unclear whether these outbreaks were linked epidemiologically to 1 or several unique strains, which could have implications for transmission patterns or strain virulence.
Methods: Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was used to compare Pneumocystis isolates from 3 outbreaks of PCP in renal transplant patients in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, as well as nontransplant isolates from both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected and uninfected patients.
