Background: Lymph node upstaging represents a quality criterion for standardized lymphadenectomy in lung cancer surgery. The aim of the study was to compare whether the quality of standardized lymphadenectomy in lung cancer surgery is comparable in minimally invasive (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) and the open approach (thoracotomy). Furthermore, factors associated with lymph node upstaging were assessed, as was its impact on overall survival and progression-free survival.

Methods: PCR-positive SARS-CoV-2 patients, enrolled in a natural history study, underwent analysis of the plasma proteome. A prospective cohort of 66 unvaccinated and 24 vaccinated persons with different degrees of infection severity were evaluated acutely (within 40 days of symptom onset), and at three and ten months.
Background: Local ablative therapies (LAT) are increasingly used in patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS), yet evidence-based standards are lacking. This study aimed to assess the impact of LAT on survival of metastatic STS patients and to identify prognostic factors.
Methods: In this retrospective multicenter study, 246 STS patients with metastatic disease who underwent LAT on tumor board recommendation between 2017 and 2021 were analyzed.
Introduction: Rural cancer caregivers experience obstacles in accessing services, obtaining respite, and ensuring their care recipients receive quality care. These challenges warrant opportunities to participate in evidence-based behavioral intervention trials to fill support gaps. Adaptation to rural settings can facilitate appropriate fit, given higher caregiver service needs and unique challenges.

Introduction: Training of interdisciplinary clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, essential in daily clinical practice in oncological specialties, are still underrepresented in medical education. Therefore, at LMU University Hospital Munich, we implemented a didactically modified tumor board simulation with experts from five different disciplines (medical oncology, pathology, radiation oncology, radiology, and surgery) presenting patient cases into a one-week course on the basic principles of oncology. In this survey, we examined the self-assessed impact of our course on the interdisciplinary decision-making skills of medical students.

To explore this, mice deficient in CD4 or Cxcr6 expression were utilized in a co-housing mouse model that mimics the natural route of Pneumocystis infection. Organism load and anti-Pneumocystis antibodies were assayed over time, and immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and quantitative PCR were used to characterize host immune responses during infection.

The study reported herein quantitatively examines the formation of a well-characterized, reactive, O-derived thiolate ligated Fe-superoxo using low-temperature stopped-flow kinetics. Comparison of the kinetic barriers to the formation of this species two routes, involving either the addition of (a) O to [Fe(S N(Pr,Pr))] (1) or (b) superoxide to [Fe(S N(Pr,Pr))] (3) is shown to provide insight into the mechanism of O activation.

During the acute phase, inflamed and uninflamed phenotypes are characterized by the expression of tissue repair and host defense response molecules. With recovery, inflammatory and fibrogenic mediators decline and clinical symptoms abate.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of antibiotic-impregnated shunt catheters (AISC) in reducing the incidence of bacterial shunt infection in patients with hydrocephalus.
Methods: The protocol was registered on PROSPERO.
Despite its ubiquitous infectivity to mammals with strong host specificity, our current knowledge about has originated from studies of merely 4% of extant mammalian species. Further studies of epidemiology across a broader range of animal species require the use of assays with high sensitivity and specificity. To this end, we have developed multiple universal primers targeting different genetic loci with high amplification efficiency.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of this multimodal approach in combination with systemic treatment on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). In this retrospective multicenter study, clinical data from patients after CRS and HITOC for PM at four high-volume thoracic surgery departments in Germany were analyzed.

SUMMARYEvery human being is presumed to be infected by the fungus at least once in his or her lifetime. This fungus belongs to a large group of species that appear to exclusively infect mammals, with being the only one known to cause disease in humans. The mystery of origin and speciation is just beginning to unravel.

Certain breeds, such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, are over-represented for pneumonia (PCP), suggesting the presence of a primary immunodeficiency in the breed. Here, we report the discovery of a nonsense variant in three Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs with either PCP (n = 2) or refractory pneumonia (n = 1).

However, which CD40-expressing cell populations are important for this interaction have not been well defined. We used a cohousing mouse model of Pneumocystis infection, combined with flow cytometry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, to examine the ability of different populations of cells from C57BL/6 mice to reconstitute immunity in CD40 knockout mice.

In a case-control study involving 26 INRs (CD4 < 250 cells/µL) and 25 immunological responders (IRs; CD4 ≥ 250 cells/µL), we evaluated the potential contribution of transcriptionally competent defective HIV-1 proviruses to poor CD4+ T-cell recovery. Compared to the responders, the INRs had higher levels of cell-associated HIV RNA (P = .
