Objective: After over 25 years of developing clinical practice guidelines, the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) held a symposium to discuss the following topics in order to improve the way evidence is implemented in the delivery of care: expansion of the data pool for guideline development, the regulatory policy framework for this expansion, the transfer of clinical practice guideline statements to medical practice, the associated opportunities and risks resulting from the European legislation.
Methods: The AWMF held its Berlin Forum on 27 April 2022 where experts from scientific medical societies and national institutions in the healthcare sector reported their experiences and perceptions on the topics mentioned. Three writing groups compiled the key statements from these contributions to and discussions made at the Berlin Forum into a position paper.
Background: Postoperative continuous thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) is an integral aspect of pain management after major abdominal and thoracic surgery. Under TEA, postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is frequently noted, prompting a common practice of maintaining the transurethral catheter (UC) until the cessation of TEA to avoid the necessity for reinsertion of the UC. This study analyzes the effect of an early bladder catheter removal during TEA on POUR incidence.

In 2012 we reported a significantly reduced in-hospital mortality if these patients are treated conservatively for at least the first 3 weeks in the course of the disease as compared to early necrosectomy. We performed a long-term follow-up and compared the outcome of these two study groups (group 1 - early necrosectomy, =20 versus group 2 - primary conservative treatment, =24).

Material And Methods: This retrospective analysis includes 64 patients with occlusive arterial or venous mesenteric ischemia treated operatively between 2008 and 2016 at the University Medical Center Rostock.
Background: Component separation (CS) for tension-free approximation of fascial edges is the established technique for the repair of large ventral hernias mostly regarding midline defects. Recent studies suggest lower complication rates following a modified version of this technique using a partially endoscopic-assisted approach, whereas little is known about the quality of life (QoL) in the long-term evaluation of these patients.
Methods: A retrospective study and analysis of patients undergoing hernia repair using an open CS (OCS) and endoscopically assisted CS (ECS) technique, respectively, from 2011 to 2016 at the Rostock University Medical Center.
Background: Despite constant improvements in diagnostic as well as interventional and surgical techniques, acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) remains a life-threatening emergency with high mortality rates. The time to diagnosis of AMI is the most important predictor of patients' outcome; therefore, prompt diagnosis and intervention are essential to reduce mortality in patients with AMI. The present review was performed to analyze potential risk factors and to help find ways to improve the outcome of patients with AMI.

The required diagnostics should address the core problem and has to be chosen based upon the diagnostic strength of each diagnostic tool. Modalities with limited discriminating information regarding differential diagnosis have to be avoided.

Objective: This study evaluates the effect of the slow releasing hydrogen sulfide donor GYY4137 (GYY) on neointimal formation in vivo.
Introduction: The constant increase in life expectancy for over 170 years is one of the biggest achievements of modern society. In Germany the probability of an 80-year-old person becoming 100 years old has increased by a factor of 20 since the 1950s. This fact has various implications for the clinical routine and therapeutic guidelines.

Samples were collected using strict standard operating procedures including blood (serum and lymphocytes), tumor tissue (vital and snap frozen), and adjacent normal epithelium. Patient and tumor data including classification, molecular type, clinical outcome, and results of the model establishment are the essential pillars.

Therefore, a new non-invasive hyperspectral camera (TIVITA® Tissue) was tested in patients with and without PAD.
Objective: It was hypothesized that the oxygenation parameters of the TIVITA® Tissue correlate to established modalities for detection of PAD and allow differentiation between individuals with and without PAD.
Background: Cranial vault reshaping to correct craniosynostosis in infants may injure terminal branches of the trigeminal nerve, namely the supraorbital, supratrochlear, zygomaticofacial, and zygomaticotemporal nerves, especially if a fronto-orbital advancement is performed. Despite numerous studies demonstrating successful esthetic outcome after FOA, there are no long-term studies assessing facial sensation after possible damage to these nerves as the result of surgery.
Methods: A cross-sectional case-control research design was used to evaluate facial sensory threshold in the trigeminal branches after cranial vault reconstruction in children with isolated, nonsyndromic metopic, and unicoronal craniosynostosis, compared with those with sagittal craniosynostosis and age-matched nonaffected controls.
This study investigated the impact of immune-related pathway inhibition, among them indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), alone and together with immune cells on growth and viability of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. A panel of patient-derived CRC cell lines with different molecular characteristics (CpG island methylator phenotype, chromosomal, and microsatellite instability) was included. Initial phenotyping of CRC cell lines (n=17) revealed high abundance of immunosuppressive checkpoint-molecules in general, but an individual profile for IDO.

As a matter of course, patients seek an early closure of the stoma. However, preoperative management of these patients varies and the prediction of continence after stoma removal can become challenging.

At The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, microneurovascular transfer of free-muscle transplant is the procedure of choice for midfacial animation. The primary aim of this study was to investigate surgical outcomes of the procedure in terms of complications, secondary revisions, and smile excursion gains.

However, despite its widespread usage, research results have, to this date, been inconsistent in regard to the factor structure of the CEBQ, with several factorial models suggested. The purpose of this study was to systematically compare the 4 factor structures commonly reported in the literature on the 35-item CEBQ, using confirmatory factor analysis in the same sample.
