Purpose: A relationship between decreased plantar cutaneous sensation and impaired balance function has been reported in patients with peripheral neuropathy and diabetes. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between plantar sensation and postural balance, as well as the association between plantar sensation and sarcopenia-related motor function in community-dwelling older adults.

Methods: The participants included 1659 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 74 ± 5 years, of which 43% were male patients.

Validity of a Web-Based 24-Hour Dietary Recall of Energy and Nutrient Intakes in Japanese Adults.

Recently, web-based dietary assessment tools for the targeted population have been developed and used to estimate the dietary intake level in several epidemiological studies. This study aimed to examine the validity of estimating energy and nutrient intake by the web-based 24 h dietary recall (Web24HR), which we developed for the Japanese population. Overall, 228 adults aged ≥20 years who agreed to participate were included.

Development and preliminary validation of a prediction formula of sodium and sodium-to-potassium ratio based on multiple regression using 24-h urines.

Accurate measurement of sodium intake in the diet is challenging, and epidemiological studies can be hampered by the attenuation of associations due to measurement error in sodium intake. A prediction formula for habitual 24-h urine sodium excretion and sodium-to-potassium ratio might lead to more reliable conclusions. Five 24-h urinary samples and two Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQs) were conducted among 244 Japanese participants aged 35-80 years.

Relationship between cachexia and short physical performance battery scores in patients with heart failure attending comprehensive outpatient cardiac rehabilitation.

Heart failure (HF) can cause metabolic imbalances, leading to anabolic resistance and increased energy expenditure, which often results in weight loss and cachexia. Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation (CR), including exercise, nutritional support, and risk management, is crucial for enhancing the health and quality of life of patients with HF and is expected to play a central role in the prevention and treatment of HF-associated cachexia. However, the prevalence of cachexia in patients with HF undergoing comprehensive outpatient CR is currently unknown, and the detailed characteristics including of motor function of such patients remain undefined.

Urinary Biomarkers in Screening for the Usual Intake of Fruit and Vegetables, and Sodium, Potassium, and the Sodium-to-Potassium Ratio: Required Number and Accuracy of Measurements.

Because of within-individual variation, surveys to estimate an individual's usual food intake must be conducted over many days, in general. Here, using non-invasive biomarkers, we examined the number of measurements required to screen for the usual intake of fruit and vegetables, in addition to sodium, potassium, and the sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio. Participants were 202 subjects aged 40-74 years from five areas of Japan who completed weighed food records (WFR) and five 24-hour urinary collections (24-h UCs) between 2012 and 2013.

HIV/AIDS knowledge level, awareness of public health centers and related factors: a cross-sectional study among Brazilians in Japan.

Background: Accurate information is essential so that HIV infection can be detected in time for initiation of HIV/AIDS treatment. Immigrants are at high risk for delayed HIV testing and diagnosis, but foreign residents in Japan also seem to face barriers to accessing HIV/AIDS care. We aimed to assess their knowledge level of HIV/AIDS and awareness of public health centers in Japan (PHCs), and to explore factors related to these items.

Background: Pemafibrate has been reported to ameliorate lipid profiles and liver dysfunction. However, which patients derive benefit from the hepatoprotective effects of pemafibrate is unclear.

Methods: We conducted a sub-analysis of the PARM-T2D study where subjects with type 2 diabetes complicated by hypertriglyceridemia were prospectively treated with pemafibrate or conventional therapies for 52 weeks.

Locomotive syndrome and depressive symptoms: A cross-sectional study in middle-aged women.

Objective: Evidence for an association between locomotive syndrome (LS) and depression is lacking in middle-aged women. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between LS severity and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling middle-aged women.

The party balloon inflation maneuver increases intrathoracic pressure, decreases venous return, and after release enhances venous return to the right atrium more effectively than does the conventional Valsalva maneuver. Therefore, it shows potential for more effective detection of right-to-left shunts in patients with a patent foramen ovale. ().

FUS-ERG induces late-onset azacitidine resistance in acute myeloid leukaemia cells.

FUS-ERG is a chimeric gene with a poor prognosis, found in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). It remains unclear whether DNA hypomethylating agents, including azacitidine (Aza), are effective in FUS-ERG-harbouring AML and how FUS-ERG induces chemoresistance. Stable Ba/F3 transfectants with FUS-ERG were repeatedly exposed to Aza for 7 days of treatment and at 21-day intervals to investigate Aza sensitivity.

Background: The distribution of radiation exposure on the body surface of interventional echocardiographers during structural heart disease (SHD) procedures is unclear.

Objectives: This study estimated and visualized radiation exposure on the body surface of interventional echocardiographers performing transesophageal echocardiography by computer simulations and real-life measurements of radiation exposure during SHD procedures.

Methods: A Monte Carlo simulation was performed to clarify the absorbed dose distribution of radiation on the body surface of interventional echocardiographers.

Increased bioavailability of diosmetin-7-glucoside-γ-cyclodextrin inclusion complex compared with diosmin in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Diosmin (DSN) is found mainly in citrus fruits, and has potent antioxidant effects. This study aimed to evaluate pharmacokinetics of diosmetin-7-glucoside-γ-cyclodextrin (DIOSG-CD) inclusion complex. The area under the curve values from AUC0-24 of DIOSG-CD, prepared by reacting DSN and naringinase with γ-CD, were approximately 800-fold higher than those of DSN following their administration in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Novel and Efficient Method for Diagnosing Infective Endocarditis Using 16S Ribosomal RNA Gene Amplicon Sequence.

We present 2 cases that both developed infective endocarditis and underwent mitral valve replacement. In addition to positive blood culture and echocardiographic findings, such as vegetation or mitral valve perforation, the 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequence approach used was helpful for disease diagnosis. Relationship between instrumental activities of daily living decline during hospitalization and one-year mortality in elderly patients with heart failure: A multi-center prospective cohort study.

Background: It remains unclear whether instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) decline during hospitalization is related to mortality rates. This study examined the relationship between IADL decline during hospitalization and the one-year mortality rate in elderly heart failure (HF) patients.

Methods: Five hundred seventy-six consecutive patients who were hospitalized for acute decompensated HF and underwent rehabilitation were divided into groups based on changes in IADL during hospitalization: IADL maintained and IADL decline.
