Phospholipid Nanoparticles: A Novel Colloid for Blood Volume Replacement, Reanimation, and Organ Protection in Hemorrhagic Shock.

: Exsanguination is a leading cause of preventable death in military and civilian settings due to extensive blood loss and hemorrhagic shock, which trigger systemic effects such as impaired tissue perfusion, hypoxia, inflammation, and multi-organ dysfunction. Standard resuscitation restores blood volume but fails to address critical aspects of hemorrhagic shock, including inflammation, coagulopathy, and reperfusion injury. To address these limitations, novel phospholipid nanoparticle (PNP)-based resuscitative fluids, VBI-S and VBI-1, were developed to modulate nitric oxide (NO) levels, improving hemodynamic stability, tissue oxygenation, and reducing inflammatory injury.

Experiences of interventions to reduce hospital stay for older adults following elective treatment: Qualitative evidence-synthesis.

Background And Objectives: Hospitals streamline treatment pathways to reduce the length of time older adults admitted for planned procedures spend in hospital. However patient perspectives have been poorly evaluated. This systematic review aimed to understand the experiences of older patients, carers, families and staff of multi-component interventions intended to improve recovery following elective treatment.

Impact of interventions to improve recovery of older adults following planned hospital admission on quality-of-life following discharge: linked-evidence synthesis.

Objectives: To understand the impact of multicomponent interventions to improve recovery of older adults following planned hospital treatment, we conducted two systematic reviews, one of quantitative and one of qualitative evidence, and an overarching synthesis. These aimed to: • understand the effect of multicomponent interventions which aim to enhance recovery and/or reduce length of stay on patient-reported outcomes and health and social care utilisation • understand the experiences of patients, carers and staff involved in the delivery of interventions • understand how different aspects of the content and delivery of interventions may influence patient outcomes.

Review Methods: We searched bibliographic databases including MEDLINE ALL, Embase and the Health Management Information Consortium, CENTRAL, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, conducted forward and backward citation searching and examined reference lists of topically similar qualitative reviews.

A conceptual model of the impact of including carers in museum programmes for people with dementia.

Background: Research has highlighted a need for more theoretical work in arts interventions, including the role of the dyad. This study aimed to test theories from a literature review on the impact of including carers in museum programmes for people with dementia, and develop a model which can be used in other programmes to consider the impact of including carers more broadly.

Methods: Using a realist evaluation approach, theory was developed through interviews and participant-observation at six museums in the UK.

Examining the usability and viability of using a simulated classroom environment to prepare preservice science teachers during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Educator preparation programs experienced extreme challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many universities and K-12 schools moved to fully online or hybrid instructional models. These abrupt changes significantly limited preservice teachers' opportunities to engage in classroom-based practice teaching experiences, which are a bedrock of educator preparation programs to support preservice teachers in learning how to teach effectively. In this study, we examined the usability and viability of integrating simulated teaching experiences, which occur in an online, virtual classroom environment consisting of five student avatars, into elementary science method courses during the COVID-19 pandemic to prepare preservice science teachers to engage in one critical science teaching practice: facilitating discussions that engage students in scientific argumentation.

Preoperative HbA1c and Outcomes following Lower Extremity Vascular Procedures.

Background: Limited data exist evaluating preoperative hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in patients undergoing vascular procedures for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This study evaluated the relationship of preoperative HbA1c on outcomes after open and endovascular lower extremity (LE) vascular procedures for PAD.

Methods: We selected patients with PAD admitted for elective LE procedures between September 2008 and December 2015 from the Cerner Health Facts® database using International Classification of Disease, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification diagnosis and procedure codes.

Most programmes include carers, though it is not well understood what effects, if any, their inclusion has. This review aimed to understand how including carers in museum programmes impacts the PwD, the carer, and the relationship between them.

Retroperitoneal extra-adrenal myelolipoma misdiagnosed as liposarcoma: A case report.

Myelolipomas are rare benign tumors that contain a mix of fatty and hematopoietic tissues. These tumors are frequently seen in the adrenal glands. While extra-adrenal myelolipomas are extremely rare, once identified, they are commonly found in the retroperitoneum--particularly the presacral region.

Repair of a Syphilitic Aneurysm of the Noncoronary Sinus.

About one-tenth of patients with untreated chronic syphilis and tertiary syphilis develop structural complications involving the coronary ostia, ascending aorta, or aortic root. We describe a unique case of a large aortic root aneurysm of the noncoronary sinus with extrinsic compression of the right coronary artery, a complication of tertiary syphilis. Surgical intervention involved valve-sparing aortic root reconstruction with right coronary ostia reimplantation (hemi-Yacoub).

Healthy ageing in a deprived northern UK city: A co-creation study.

With ageing comes an increased risk of poor health and social isolation, particularly in poorer populations. Older people are under-represented in research and as a result interventions may not take account of their context or barriers to participation. In co-creative work, future service users work with professionals on an equal basis to design, develop and produce a service or intervention.

The whole lupus: Articulating biosocial interplay in systemic lupus erythematosus epidemiology and population disparities.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known simply as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks healthy tissue and organs. Characteristic of the disease is a disproportionate effect on women and communities of color, both in terms of prevalence and severity of symptoms. Lupus is also both genetically driven and subject to external environmental conditions, many with place based corollaries.

The psychological impact of overactive bladder: A systematic review.

This review aimed to provide an overview of the current research on the psychological impact of overactive bladder. A systematic search yielded 32 papers. It was found that people with overactive bladder tended to have greater levels of depression, anxiety and embarrassment/shame; difficulties with social life; impact on sleep and sexual relationships; and a lower quality of life than people without overactive bladder.

Using undergraduate researchers to build vector and West Nile virus surveillance capacity.

Vector surveillance for infectious diseases is labor intensive and constantly threatened by budget decisions. We report on outcomes of an undergraduate research experience designed to build surveillance capacity for West Nile Virus (WNV) in Montana (USA). Students maintained weekly trapping stations for mosquitoes and implemented assays to test for WNV in pools of Culex tarsalis.

Interventions in foster and kinship care: a systematic review.

Foster care is a complex setting in which to provide therapeutic interventions due to the high rates of difficulty, poor outcomes and high numbers of professionals and carers involved. This systematic review aims to examine interventions that have been empirically assessed in foster care. Thirty papers describing 20 interventions were included.

Recombinant human albumin supports hamster in-vitro fertilization.

Background: Serum albumin is normally required to support sperm capacitation and IVF, but its mechanism of action is not well understood. Commercial serum albumin preparations are contaminated with a variety of other proteins and compounds, and their biological activity is variable. Recombinant human albumin (rHA) might replace serum albumin for IVF.

Glucose and insulin metabolism in ruminating and veal calves fed high and low fat diets.

Holstein male calves were maintained on conventional (milk to 6 wk of age, fed grain and hay after weaning) and veal (milk replacer only) diets to 16 wk of age. Within each of these 2 physiological states (ruminating or non-ruminating), calves were fed low or high fat diets (ruminating: 3 and 10%; veal: 10 and 18%). Glucose tolerance tests were undertaken at 8 and 16 wk of age in each group.

Russian psychiatry: a nurse's perspective.

In 1990 the author visited several Russian psychiatric facilities, including two inpatient units and a community-based outpatient facility in Moscow. An analysis, based on interviews with staff and observations of clients, is presented. The author found an unexpectedly high level of openness among staff members, and a willingness to discuss both the accomplishments and the deficiencies of Soviet psychiatric care.
