Of the extended family of ATP-gated P2X ion-channels, the P2X5 receptor has received comparatively little attention since first cloned over 25 years ago. Disinterest in studying this P2X subtype stems from two commonly held beliefs: (i) canonical human P2X5 is non-functional because the P2X5 subunit is truncated (hP2X5A, 422 aa) and missing the critical peptide sequence (22 aa) encoded by exon 10; (ii) rat and mouse P2X5 subunits are fully formed (455 aa) but the receptor is only weakly functional, and successive ATP responses rapidly run down in amplitude. However, newer studies have re-evaluated these notions.

Adaptive Behavior in Young Autistic Children: Associations with Irritability and ADHD Symptoms.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms affect 40-60% of autistic children and have been linked to differences in adaptive behavior. It is unclear whether adaptive behavior in autistic youth is directly impacted by co-occurring ADHD symptoms or by another associated feature of both autism and ADHD, such as increased irritability. The current study examined relationships between irritability, ADHD symptoms, and adaptive behavior in 3- to 7-year-old autistic children.

Famine exposure in adolescence is associated with a higher risk of overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood: A meta-analysis.

Some studies have shown that famine exposure during adolescence can increase cardiovascular disease and diabetes susceptibility in later life. The association between famine exposure in adolescence and overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood has been inconsistent. Based on previous studies, we hypothesized that famine exposure in adolescence increases the risk of overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity in adulthood.

Pulmonary Hypertension in Preterm Infants Treated With Laser vs Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Importance: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has potential ocular and systemic advantages compared with laser, but we believe the systemic risks of anti-VEGF therapy in preterm infants are poorly quantified.

Objective: To determine whether there was an association with increased risk of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in preterm infants with ROP following treatment with anti-VEGF therapy as compared with laser treatment.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter retrospective cohort study took place at neonatal intensive care units of 48 children's hospitals in the US in the Pediatric Health Information System database from 2010 to 2020.

Characterization of the human iridocorneal angle using a custom design goniolens with OCT gonioscopy.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma progression, and many treatments target the trabecular meshwork (TM). Imaging this region is challenging due to optical limitations of imaging through the cornea at high angles. We propose a gonioscopic OCT approach using a custom goniolens and a commercially available OCT device to improve imaging of the TM, Schlemm's canal (SC) and adjacent structures within the iridocorneal angle (ICA).

Although genome sequencing has demonstrated that some subtypes of HCV naturally harbor drug resistance associated substitutions (RAS), these are often overlooked as "rarities." Furthermore, commercial subtyping assays and associated epidemiological findings are skewed towards Western cohorts and whole-genome sequencing can be problematic to deploy without significant infrastructure and training support.

Supporting Decision-Making About Patient Mobility in the Intensive Care Unit Nurse Work Environment: Work Domain Analysis.

Background: Patient mobility is an evidenced-based physical activity intervention initiated during intensive care unit (ICU) admission and continued throughout hospitalization to maintain functional status, yet mobility is a complex intervention and not consistently implemented. Cognitive work analysis (CWA) is a useful human factors framework for understanding complex systems and can inform future technology design to optimize outcomes.

Objective: Estimate hospital variation in echocardiography (echo) among very preterm infants.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study of very preterm (<32 weeks) infants discharged between 2012 and 2019 from US children's hospitals. Echo exposure was identified using daily billing, and hospital variation was estimated after adjustment for illness severity.

Intracellular complement: Evidence, definitions, controversies, and solutions.

The term "intracellular complement" has been introduced recently as an umbrella term to distinguish functions of complement proteins that take place intracellularly, rather than in the extracellular environment. However, this rather undefined term leaves some confusion as to the classification of what intracellular complement really is, and as to which intracellular compartment(s) it should refer to. In this review, we will describe the evidence for both canonical and non-canonical functions of intracellular complement proteins, as well as the current controversies and unanswered questions as to the nature of the intracellular complement.

To compare evening and overnight hypoglycemia risk after late afternoon exercise with a nonexercise control day in adults with type 1 diabetes using automated insulin delivery (AID). Thirty adults with type 1 diabetes using AID (Minimed 670G) performed in random order 40 min high intensity interval aerobic exercise (HIE), resistance (RE), and moderate intensity aerobic exercise (MIE) exercise each separated by >1 week. medna-metadata: an open-source data management system for tracking environmental DNA samples and metadata.

Motivation: Environmental DNA (eDNA), as a rapidly expanding research field, stands to benefit from shared resources including sampling protocols, study designs, discovered sequences, and taxonomic assignments to sequences. High-quality community shareable eDNA resources rely heavily on comprehensive metadata documentation that captures the complex workflows covering field sampling, molecular biology lab work, and bioinformatic analyses. There are limited sources that provide documentation of database development on comprehensive metadata for eDNA and these workflows and no open-source software.

Effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on major depressive disorder with peripartum onset: A multicenter, open-label, controlled proof-of-concept clinical trial (DELOS-1).

Background: Postpartum depression has a high prevalence in the United States (~13 %) and often goes undertreated/untreated. We conducted a multicenter, open-label, proof-of-concept trial to assess the Nēsos wearable, non-invasive, transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) system for the treatment of major depressive disorder with peripartum onset (PPD).
