Background: Inherited cholestatic liver disorders such as progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) and Alagille syndrome result in significant pruritus and increased serum bile acids, necessitating liver transplantation. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ileal bile acid transport inhibitors (IBATIs) in children with PFIC and Alagille syndrome.

Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search across the databases to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and Covidence was used to screen eligible articles.

Most species of pheasants (Galliformes: Phasianidae) occur in Asia. In Pakistan, pheasants occur from 245-3050 m in altitude, and one of these, the Kalij pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) is a large-bodied, brightly-colored habitat quality indicator species. The present study was designed to determine spatiotemporal variation, population size, and the relative abundance of Kalij pheasants in Haripur, Pakistan.

Background Ankle fractures are prevalent lower limb injuries that often necessitate surgical intervention to restore joint stability and functionality. Delays in surgical management can extend hospital stays and elevate the risk of complications. This study aims to evaluate the effect of surgical timing on the postoperative length of hospital stay in patients with closed ankle fractures managed through open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).

Introduction: Conservative treatment options, such as rest, massage, cold and heat packs, wrist splints, braces, physical therapy, thumb spica casts, and local steroid injections, have been used with mixed results to treat De Quervain's tenosynovitis. Surgical treatment, like releasing the first dorsal wrist compartment, is the last resort for resistant cases of De Quervain's tenosynovitis, exhibiting an efficacy of 91%. However, complications and increased expenses have limited the use of surgical interventions.

Background & Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is often overlooked in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Our study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the burden of MASLD in T1DM by assessing the prevalence of MASLD and its advanced forms in individuals with T1DM.

Methods: We systematically searched PubMed and Embase databases (from inception to May 5, 2024) for original articles on the prevalence or characteristics of MASLD (as detected by blood biomarkers/scores, imaging techniques, or liver biopsy) in adults with T1DM.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two lip augmentation techniques: the surgical V-Y method and autogenous micro-fat injections, focusing on patient satisfaction measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS).
  • Conducted on 40 female patients, results showed that 1 month post-treatment, the micro-fat injection group reported significantly higher satisfaction, while the V-Y surgical group had better satisfaction after 6 months.
  • The findings suggest that while micro-fat injections provide quick satisfaction, the V-Y surgical technique might offer better long-term results for lip augmentation.

Background: Conventional axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is associated with significant post-operative morbidity in patients undergoing breast surgery due to increased lymphatic leakage. LigaSure, an electrothermal bipolar vessel sealing system, provides better closure of the leakage. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of LigaSure against conventional techniques in patients with breast cancer underwent ALND and breast surgery.

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood derivative with an enhanced platelet concentration and can enhance the tissue-healing process naturally. Plasma with a higher concentration of platelets on activation leads to the release of various growth factors that in turn augment tissue repair and jump-start the healing process. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of PRP in reducing pain and improving functional outcomes in patients with plantar fasciitis who had failed to respond to conservative treatment.

Background/objectives: Raloxifene (RLF) is a therapeutic option for invasive breast cancer because it blocks estrogen receptors selectively. Low solubility, limited targeting, first-pass action, and poor absorption are some of the challenges that make RLF in oral form less effective. This study aimed to create an intra-tumoral in situ pH-responsive formulation of RLF-invasome (IPHRLI) for breast cancer treatment, with the goals of sustaining RLF release, minimizing adverse effects, and enhancing solubility, bioavailability, targeting, and effectiveness.

  • * 60 thalassemia patients were divided into three groups based on their chelation treatments: oral deferiprone daily, subcutaneous deferoxamine four times weekly, and a combination of both therapies.
  • * Results show that the combination therapy was the most effective in reducing iron levels and improving urinary iron excretion, while patients on deferoxamine had the least hepatic iron deposition, though still above normal levels.

This study provides a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the transformation process of copper-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-BTC MOFs) into nanoporous copper oxides (P-CuO) through controlled calcination. While calcination is a well-established method for producing MOF-derived oxides, previous studies have primarily focused on their applications. Most of them often lack detailed exploration of the transformation process and decomposition mechanisms though it is crucial for achieving tunability in MOF-derived structures.

  • Psoriasis is a lifelong skin condition, and Tofacitinib, a type of JAK inhibitor, may help improve skin lesions and overall patient outcomes, but it also carries risks like increased infections due to its immunosuppressive nature.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, following specific guidelines, to compare the safety of Tofacitinib against placebo, focusing on the occurrence of serious infections and other adverse effects among participants.
  • Among 998 studies, only six randomized controlled trials with 2,516 psoriasis patients were included; the results indicated increased risks of herpes zoster and respiratory infections, but no significant differences in safety outcomes were found between those taking Tofacitinib and those receiving a placebo

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that people with HIV have an increased atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability, making them more susceptible to severe cardiovascular complications. This study aimed to examine the clinical characteristics of people with HIV in comparison to people without HIV admitted to Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with their first major acute cardiovascular events (MACE) and compare their total mortality.

Methods: We used national VHA data to extract data of those admitted to VHA hospitals with MACE defined as acute myocardial infarction (AMI), acute cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or cardiac arrest during the fiscal years 2003-2021.
