Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract (URT) is one of the minimally invasive techniques used for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in horses. Training in the use of an endoscope follows an apprenticeship approach, with extensive practice needed to help achieve effective skills acquisition. The use of live animals for training presents the risk of injury to both the animal and the trainee.

The chemomodulatory effects of resveratrol and didox on herceptin cytotoxicity in breast cancer cell lines.

Herceptin is considered an essential treatment option for double negative breast cancer. Resveratrol and didox are known chemopreventive agents with potential anticancer properties. The aim of the current study is to investigate the influence of resveratrol and didox on the cytotoxicity profile of herceptin in HER-2 receptor positive and HER-2 receptor negative breast cancer cell lines (T47D and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively).

Emergence of OXA-204 β-lactamase in Tunisia.

A retrospective epidemiological survey was carried out to determine the prevalence of carbapenemase producers among enterobacterial clinical isolates recovered in the center of maternity and neonatology of Monastir (Tunisia). PCR screening identified 1 OXA-48 and 2 OXA-204 producers, which coexpressed the CTX-M-15 or the CMY-4 β-lactamases. PCR mapping showed that the bla(OXA-48) gene was carried by a Tn1999.

Accurate estimation of the myocardium global function from reduced magnetic resonance image acquisitions.

Evaluating the heart global function from magnetic resonance images is based on estimating a number of functional parameters such as the left ventricular (LV) volume, LV mass, ejection fraction, and stroke volume. Estimating these parameters requires accurate calculation of the volumes enclosed by the inner and outer surfaces of the LV chamber at the max contraction and relaxation states of the heart. Currently, this is achieved through acquisition and segmentation of a large number of short-axis (SAX) views of the LV, which is time-consuming and expensive.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable imaging modality, as it can noninvasively provide information about myocardial function, viability, and morphology. Viability delayed-enhancement (DE) images are acquired at a single timeframe while myocardial functional (tagged) images are acquired as a cine loop of timeframes throughout the cardiac cycle.

The influence of the analysis technique on estimating liver iron overload using magnetic resonance imaging T2* quantification.

Iron toxicity is the major cause of tissue damage in patients with iron overload. Iron deposits mainly in the liver, where its concentration closely correlates with whole body iron overload. Different techniques have been proposed for estimating iron content, with liver biopsy being the gold standard despite its invasiveness and influence by sampling error.

Juices of edible fruits from Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller, commonly named prickly pears or Indian figs, were analysed for amino acids using an automated amino acid analyser run in the high-resolution physiological mode. Emphasis was put on the detection of free taurine (Tau), but Tau could be detected neither in different cultivars of prickly pears from Italy, South Africa and the Near East nor in commercially available prickly pear juices from the market.

Distinct pathways of cholesterol biosynthesis impact on insulin secretion.

Results from previous investigations have indicated that glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) is affected by changes in cholesterol and its intermediates, but the precise link between secretion and cholesterol has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we show the contribution of both protein isoprenylation and cholesterol-dependent plasma membrane structural integrity to insulin secretion in INS-1E cells and mouse islets. Acute (2 h) inhibition of hydroxyl-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase by simvastatin (SIM) resulted in inhibition of GSIS without reduction in total cellular cholesterol content.

The current study aimed to investigate the potential role of the anti-inflammatory effects of silymarin (SIL) in inhibiting experimentally induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in rats. Rats were injected testosterone (3 mg/kg/day, subcutaneously (s.c.
