Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentary disorder of the skin, characterized by incomplete penetrance, multiple susceptibility loci and genetic heterogeneity. An immunologic hypothesis is currently advanced as a possible pathogenesis of vitiligo. The cytokines have an important role in pathogenesis of autoimmunity in which tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a paracrine inhibitor of melanocytes, is especially important.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of pinacidil and cromakalim, KATP-sensitive channel activators, on sheep sphincters of Oddi (SO).
Methods: SO rings were mounted in a tissue bath and tested for changes in isometric tension in response to pinacidil (10(-9)-10(-4)M) and cromakalim (10(-9)-10(-4)M) in the presence or absence of glibenclamide (10(-6)M), a blocker of KATP channels.
Background/aims: Nitric oxide (NO) is a major inhibitor in various parts of the gastrointestinal tract. This study was designed to compare the effects of YC-1, NO-independent soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) activator, and DEA/NO, NO-nucleophile adduct, on sheep sphincters of Oddi (SO).
Methods: SO rings were mounted in a tissue bath and tested for changes in isometric tension in response to 3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1, 10(-10)-10(-5)M), diethylamine/NO complex (DEA/NO, 10(-8)-10(-4)M).

Background: Eruptive vellus hair cysts are uncommon developmental anomalies of vellus hair follicles that are observed in young patients. Two patients were evaluated for asymptomatic flesh-coloured papules appearing on the chest, abdomen and axillae. Lesions of both patients were diagnosed histologically as eruptive vellus hair cyst, which is a disorder with no standard treatment option.

Background: Apolipoprotein E (apoE) phenotypes and lipoprotein compositions in xanthelasma patients have been reported in different series.
Objective: To investigate the apoE polymorphism and lipoprotein compositions in xanthelasma patients by using rapid polymerase chain reaction, and searched for an association between apoE polymorphism and the lipoprotein levels in xanthelasma patients.
Design: ApoE polymorphism and the different types of serum lipoproteins were studied in 25 patients with xanthelasma and compared with 27 normal subjects.
Studies of associations between various cancers and the ABO blood groups have shown elevated relative risks for some categories of disease. To date, no report has evaluated the relationship between the ABO blood groups and the skin cancers. To investigate this association, we conducted a retrospective study of premalignant and malignant tumors diagnosed in Turkey.

Thirty-one patients diagnosed as AS according to the modified New York criteria for AS were included in this study. Three radiographic scoring methods were used to assess spinal damage.

Myometrial strips were obtained from term-pregnant Wistar albino rats (n=12), mounted in organ baths and tested for changes in isometric tension in response to formoterol and BRL 37344. We evaluated the effect of increasing concentrations of formoterol and BRL 37344 on oxytocin-induced myometrial contractions and on contractions of myometrial smooth muscle pretreated with metoprolol, ICI 118.

Favre-Racouchot disease (FRD) is a common disease characterized by solar elastosis and large open comedones and cysts. This disorder mainly affects elderly Caucasian men who have had a great deal of exposure to the sun. Patients having FRD continuously develop numerous large open comedones that could cause a cosmetic problem.

Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH) is a common but often unrecognized skin disease with obscure etiopathogenesis. As the lesions mostly develop on the exposed parts of the extremities, ultraviolet has been hypothesized to induce these lesions. However, previous statistical studies did not confirm any association between ultraviolet and IGH.

Materials And Methods: Duplex sonography was performed in 41 patients with normal-tension glaucoma and 30 control subjects to evaluate resistance indices (RIs) in retro-orbital and carotid arteries. Mean values were compared using the independent t-test.
This study was designed to compare the effects of YC-1 (3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole), a nitric oxide (NO)-independent soluble guanylate cyclase activator, and diethylenetriamine-NONOate (DETA/NO), a NO donor, on spontaneous contractions and the levels of cyclic GMP (cGMP) of myometrial strips isolated from timed-pregnant rats. Myometrial strips were obtained from timed-pregnant Wistar albino rats (n=10) and were mounted in organ baths and tested for changes in isometric tension in response to YC-1 and DETA/NO. We also evaluated the effect of YC-1 and DETA/NO on the levels of cGMP in myometrial strips obtained from timed-pregnant rat uterine horns (n=20).

Solvent mapping moves molecular probes, small organic molecules containing various functional groups, around the protein surface, finds favorable positions, clusters the conformations, and ranks the clusters based on the average free energy. Using at least six different solvents as probes, the probes cluster in major pockets of the functional site, providing detailed and reliable information on the amino acid residues that are important for ligand binding. Solvent mapping was applied to 12 structures of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) ligand-binding domain (LBD), including 2 structures without a ligand, 2 structures with a partial agonist, and 8 structures with a PPAR agonist bound.

Possible mechanisms for nicotine-induced relaxation were investigated in the isolated sheep's sphincter of Oddi. Sheep's sphincter of Oddi rings were mounted in tissue bath with modified Krebs-Henseleit solution and aerated with 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide. Tension was measured with isometric force transducers, and muscle relaxation was expressed as percent decrease of precontraction induced by carbachol.
