This article documents the addition of 139 microsatellite marker loci and 90 pairs of single-nucleotide polymorphism sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Aglaoctenus lagotis, Costus pulverulentus, Costus scaber, Culex pipiens, Dascyllus marginatus, Lupinus nanus Benth, Phloeomyzus passerini, Podarcis muralis, Rhododendron rubropilosum Hayata var. taiwanalpinum and Zoarces viviparus.

Presented is a rare case of a primary melanoma of the lung in an 89 year old male patient. Primary melanoma of the lung has been previously reported in the English literature in about 30 patients. Surgical resection either with lobectomy of pneumonectomy and a lymph node dissection has been shown to be the best chance of long term survival.

Photoinduced electron-transfer processes of a newly synthesized rodlike covalently linked ferrocene-naphthalenediimide-[60]fullerene (Fc-NDI-C(60)) triad in which Fc is an electron donor and NDI and C(60) are electron acceptors with similar first one-electron reduction potentials have been studied in benzonitrile. In the examined Fc-NDI-C(60) triad, NDI with high molar absorptivity is considered to be the chromophore unit for photoexcitation. Although the free-energy calculations verify that photoinduced charge-separation processes via singlet- and triplet-excited states of NDI are feasible, transient absorption spectra observed upon femtosecond laser excitation of NDI at 390 nm revealed fast and efficient electron transfer from Fc to the singlet-excited state of NDI ((1)NDI*) to produce Fc(+)-NDI(•-)-C(60).

Central glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) stimulation suppresses food intake, and hindbrain GLP-1 neurons project to numerous feeding-relevant brain regions. One such region is the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which plays a role in reward and motivated behavior. Using immunohistochemical and retrograde tracing techniques in rats, we identified a robust projection from GLP-1 neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract to the NAc.

Hypothalamic orexin neurons project to the hindbrain, and 4th-ventricle intracerebroventricular (4th-icv) injection of orexin-A treatment increases food intake. We assessed the effects of hindbrain orexin-A and the orexin-1-receptor antagonist SB334867 on meal pattern in rats consuming standard chow. When injected 4th-icv shortly before dark onset, lower doses of orexin-A increased food intake over a 2-h period by increasing the size of the first meal relative to vehicle, whereas the highest dose increased food intake by causing the second meal to be taken sooner.

Previous data suggests that the adiposity signal leptin reduces food intake in part by enhancing sensitivity to short-term signals that promote meal termination, including glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). We hypothesized that maintenance on a high-fat (HF) diet, which causes resistance to leptin, would impair GLP-1's ability to reduce food intake. To test this hypothesis, we examined the anorexic responses to intraperitoneal injection of 100 μg/kg GLP-1 and 1 μg/kg exendin-4 (Ex-4), the potent, degradation resistant GLP-1 receptor agonist, in Wistar rats maintained on a low-fat (10%; LF) or HF (60%) diet for 4-6 weeks.

Background: In a spatially and temporally variable adaptive landscape, mutations operating in opposite directions and mutations of large effect should be commonly fixed due to the shifting locations of phenotypic optima. Similarly, an adaptive landscape with multiple phenotypic optima and deep valleys of low fitness between peaks will favor mutations of large effect. Traits under biotic selection should experience a more spatially and temporally variable adaptive landscape with more phenotypic optima than that experienced by traits under abiotic selection.

As choroidal changes have been suggested in glaucoma, we examined peripapillary choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with and without primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). We collected measurements retrospectively on 70 eyes of 70 patients consecutively undergoing SD-OCT. POAG (n = 31) and suspect eyes (n = 39) had two reliable and repeatable Humphrey 24-2 visual fields with glaucoma hemifield test outside or within normal limits, respectively.

Background: This was a randomized, assessor-blind, controlled comparison of a soya oil- based medical device shampoo with a medicinal permethrin lotion in an alcohol vehicle for treatment of head louse infestation to generate data suitable for a regulatory submission to achieve reimbursable status for the shampoo product.

Calcineurin has been implicated as part of a critical signaling pathway for learning and memory, and recent data suggest that calcineurin activation mediates some of the neurotoxicity of the Alzheimer related neurotoxin Aβ. Immunosuppression via calcineurin inhibition with the compound FK506 is an important treatment for organ transplant patients. Here we use Golgi impregnation techniques, along with a new survival analysis-based statistical approach for analysis of dendritic complexity, to show that in healthy adult mice one week of treatment with FK506 affects both the branching patterns and dendritic spine density of cortical neurons.

Information obtained during psychological evaluations of 93 patients with epileptic events (EEs) and 63 with nonepileptic events (NEEs) was used to test the relative contributions of multiple risk factors to prediction of NEEs during video/EEG monitoring. The best group of independent predictors of NEEs comprised: (1) age at first spell, (2) symptoms of a psychiatric diagnosis other than anxiety or depression, (3) marital instability, (4) symptoms of an anxiety disorder other than panic disorder, and (5) years of education. Report of childhood abuse or neglect and taking psychotropic medication correlated with most of the other risk factors for NEEs.

A 39-year-old man with poliosis of his lower eyelid lashes visited our clinic. He reported that his symptoms began with a few central lashes and then spread along the adjacent lashes during the ensuing 2 weeks. A pigmented nevus, approximately 4 mm in diameter, was identified just above the white lashes without surrounding skin depigmentation.

A semiclassical initial value approximation is obtained for the energy-dependent Green's function. For a system with f degrees of freedom the Green's function expression has the form of a (2f-1)-dimensional integral over points on the energy surface and an integral over time along classical trajectories initiated from these points. We report here the formation of a long-lived charge-separated state of a self-assembled donor-acceptor tetrad, formed by axial coordination of a fulleropyrrolidine appended with an imidazole coordinating ligand (C(60)Im) to the zinc center of a subphthalocyanine-triphenylamine-zinc porphyrin (SubPc-TPA-ZnP), as a charge-stabilizing antenna reaction center mimic in toluene. The subphthalocyanine and triphenylamine entities, with their high-energy singlet states, act as an energy-transferring antenna unit to produce a singlet zinc porphyrin. The formation constant for the self-assembled tetrad was determined to be 1.

Spectroscopic, redox, computational, and electron transfer reactions of the covalently linked zinc porphyrin-triphenylamine-fulleropyrrolidine system are investigated in solvents of varying polarity. An appreciable interaction between triphenylamine and the porphyrin pi system is revealed by steady-state absorption and emission, redox, and computational studies. Free-energy calculations suggest that the light-induced processes via the singlet-excited porphyrin are exothermic in benzonitrile, dichlorobenzene, toluene, and benzene.

Recent studies have used fMRI signals from early visual areas to reconstruct simple geometric patterns. Here, we demonstrate a new Bayesian decoder that uses fMRI signals from early and anterior visual areas to reconstruct complex natural images. Our decoder combines three elements: a structural encoding model that characterizes responses in early visual areas, a semantic encoding model that characterizes responses in anterior visual areas, and prior information about the structure and semantic content of natural images.

Photoinduced intramolecular processes of a newly synthesized pentad composed of silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc) that is connected with two units of naphthalenediimide (NDI) and fullerene C(60) to form SiPc-(NDI)(2)-(C(60))(2) have been studied and the results are compared with the reference compounds, namely, the SiPc-(NDI)(2) triad and NDI-C(60) dyad. Upon photoexcitation, the main quenching pathway in polar solvents involved electron transfer via the singlet excited states of SiPc-(NDI)(2)-(C(60))(2) and SiPc-(NDI)(2), but not NDI-C(60) for which the energy transfer is dominant. The occurrence of electron-transfer processes of SiPc-(NDI)(2)-(C(60))(2) and SiPc-(NDI)(2) were studied by time-resolved emission and transient absorption techniques and confirmed by redox measurements and molecular orbital calculations with ab initio B3 LYP/3-21G(*) methods.
