Prevention of acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) is becoming an increasingly important concept in public health application due to the increase in antibiotic resistance. Probiotics have been shown to have some effect on prevention in various reviews. In this study we aimed to re-asses the effect of probiotics as there has been a substantial increase in literature regarding the effects and safety of probiotics in the paediatric population.

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Annual Meeting has historically had an open call peer review process for workshop speakers and, in 2019, expanded the process for didactic speakers. In the present study, we evaluated the association between polymorphisms in two DNA repair genes, ERCC2 Lys751Gln (rs13181) and XRCC2 Arg188His (rs3218536) and the risk of colorectal, stomach, HCC, prostate and lung cancer.

Introduction: Enterococci are microbiota microorganisms that normally have low virulence; however, under some conditions they may cause community-acquired urinary tract and even hospital-acquired serious infections. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) can cause aggressive infections in immunosuppressive patients; especially in newborns in intensive care units. Asymptomatic gastrointestinal system carriers are important sources of VRE.

Renal function and the oxidative status among children with thalassemia major and healthy controls: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Renal dysfunction is an underestimated complication of thalassemia major.

MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective study we evaluated 14 patients. Data included age, side of surgery, the degree of extensor lag, the ratio of the damaged articular surface, postoperative recovery period and time to return to work.

The effect of deferasirox on endocrine complications in children with thalassemia.

Endocrine system dysfunctions are the significant complications of excessive iron overload in beta thalassemia patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of chelation with deferasirox on endocrine complications. The study group consisted of children with beta thalassemia who had been evaluated for the growth and pubertal development, bone metabolism, thyroid/parathyroid functions, glucose metabolism dysfunctions in the department of pediatric hematology of Ankara Dışkapı Child Health and Diseases Hematology Oncology Training And Research Hospital between 2009-2011 and reevaluated after deferasirox chelation therapy in 2018.

The effect of adenosine triphosphate on sunitinib-induced cardiac injury in rats.

In this study, we aimed to show the effect of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) on sunitinib-induced cardiac injury in rats. The rats ( = 30) were divided equally into three groups as sunitinib group (SG), sunitinib plus ATP group (SAG), and healthy group (HG); 2 mg/kg ATP was injected intraperitoneally (ip) to the SAG group. Same volume normal saline as solvent was administered ip to the other two groups.

Peptide-protein based nanofibers in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

In recent years, electrospun fibers have found wide use, especially in pharmaceutical area and biomedical applications, related to the various advantages such as high surface-volume ratio, high solubility and having wide usage areas they have provided. Biocompatible and biodegradable fibers can be obtained by using peptide-protein structures of plant and animal derived along with synthetic polymers. Plant-derived proteins used in nanofiber production can be listed as, zein, soy protein, and gluten and animal derived proteins can be listed as casein, silk fibroin, hemoglobine, bovine serum albumin, elastin, collagen, gelatin, and keratin.

Acute Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Secondary to Amyloidosis.

Introduction: ACTS secondary to amyloidosis is a very rare situation in the literature, and here, we present a unique case of ACTS secondary to amyloidosis.

Case Report: A 61-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with complaints of numbness in the lateral half of his 1, 2, 3, and 4 fingers of his right hand. These complaints started acutely, and the patient did not have a history of trauma.

Effects of anakinra on the small intestine mucositis induced by methotrexate in rats.

Intestinal mucositis is an important problem in the patients receiving cancer treatment. We aimed to investigate the effect of anakinra, which is a well known anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, on methotrexate-induced small intestine mucositis in rats. Forty rats were divided into 4 groups with 10 in each group.

The impact of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-TT) on meningococcal carriage in Hajj Pilgrims returning to Turkey.

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine was administered for the first time to pilgrims in 2018 in Turkey prior to their departure to the Hajj. This study aimed to determine the effect of vaccination on the prevalence of carriage among the pilgrims returning to Turkey. This prospective paired (departing and arriving) cohort study included pilgrims aged 10-80 years and compared carriage before and after pilgrimage.
