Objective: A review was performed to investigate the frequency of occurrence and outcome of patients who have retained surgical sponges.

Methods: Closed case records from the files of the Medical Professional Mutual Insurance Company (ProMutual, Boston, MA) involving a claim of retained surgical sponges were reviewed for a 7-year period.

Results: Retained sponges occurred in 40 patients, comprising 48% of all closed claims for retained foreign bodies.

The utility of capillary electrophoresis (CE) for assessing the purity and stability of pharmaceutical peptides is investigated. The degradation of nisin, a pentacyclic peptide antibiotic, depends upon sample preparation and storage conditions and is followed by CE. With conventional UV detection, peaks are not identified and unresolved components are not detected.

Crowding.

In Vivo

March 1997

Crowding is the situation in which case a large number of animals, including man, are restricted in environmental space. Such an occurrence may start with just a few animals. In plants, including bacteria in culture, agriculture may be considered as an artificial example of this process.

The retinoblastoma gene is the prototype of the tumor suppressor genes, which play critical roles in the genesis of cancer in humans. Although the precise function of the retinoblastoma gene product remains unknown, recent data suggests that it plays dual roles in gating cell cycle progression and promoting cellular differentiation. The molecular mechanisms involved in these roles are becoming clear in some biological systems: pRb binds and sequester several transcription factors to regulate entry of cell cycle and to initiate terminal cellular differentiation.

Mice infected with Friend Leukemia Virus (FLV) rapidly develop erythroleukemia and severe immune deficiency which resembles human AIDS. We have reported that mice infected with a lethal dose of FLV can be 100% cured by 150 cGy total body irradiation (TBI). This curative effect was associated with restoration of cellular immunity which was compromised by the virus.

Hemocytic immune reactions were investigated in the chilopod myriapods Scolopendra cingulata and Lithobius forficatus. Hemocytes were taken into cell culture medium and challenged with latex beads, pre-fixed rat erythrocytes, or bacteria. After 1 to 4 hours in vitro hemocyte preparations were processed for electron microscopy.

Pathologic integration is the basic phenomenon of comparative pathology. Since man evolved as earth's most influential species, he was unequally influenced the progression and prevention of diseases in himself and other species. This has both positive and negative ramifications.

Classical therapeutic modalities such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy not only fail to cure the majority of neoplastic disease, but their employment also leads to severe and debilitating side effects. The severe cancer related morbidity is often associated with the use of radiation and chemotherapy, making them less than ideal forms of therapy. Entirely new approaches to cancer therapy that are tumor cell directed, and specifically lethal to malignant cells and less toxic to normal tissues are being observed and developed, adhering to the old prayer "Destroy the diseased tissues, preserve the normal.

Vinculin and beta-catenin are intracellular attachment proteins linking transmembrane adhesion molecules (E-cadherin) to the actin microfilament cytoskeleton, thus participating in formation of cell-cell adherens junctions, or zonulae adherentes. This type of junction was only recently described in human epidermis due to the imprecise morphological criteria for its recognition. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the expression of the zonula adherens-associated proteins vinculin, beta-catenin, E-cadherin, and actin, on the one hand, and the presence of electron microscopically discernable structures in normal human epidermis on the other.

Objective: To establish and quantify the point during inspiration that the Autohaler (AH) inhalation system releases a metered dose of aerosol (placebo). The second objective was to determine if the Autohaler system actuates consistently, regardless of the canister life.

Design: Double-blind, randomized, two-period crossover, one-day trial.

The western North American complex of spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) exhibits isolation-by-distance, genetic subdivision, and speciation in association with its extensive northward range shift in postglacial times. The southern relict populations of R. pretiosa species B existing at high altitudes or in desert springs have been subjected to restricted gene flow, high inbreeding, and bottlenecks to produce significant between-population genetic diversity.

In severe burns a total body surface area (TBSA) of more than 60% restricts possible donor areas for autologous STS coverage. Additional wound surfaces may further harm the patient. From a skin biopsy of 5 cm2 the total body surface can be covered using keratinocyte cultures to multiply cells by 1000 up to 10,000.

Partitioning of small hydrophobic molecules into lipid bilayers containing cholesterol has been studied using the 2XC diffractometer at the University of Missouri Research Reactor. Locations of the compounds were determined by Fourier difference methods with data from both deuterated and undeuterated compounds introduced into the bilayers from the vapor phase. Data fitting procedures were developed for determining how well the compounds were localized.

Long-term levodopa treatment in Parkinson's disease is typically associated with "motor side effects" consisting in dyskinesias and/or fluctuations in motility referred to as the on-off phenomena. The main objective of this prospective, randomized, multi-centre study was to determine to what extent the development of such complications could be prevented by partial substitution of levodopa monotherapy (L-DOPA/benserazide) by bromocriptine in patients with early symptoms of the disease. The basic trial population included 674 newly diagnosed Parkinsonian patients that were randomly allocated to monotherapy with levodopa or a combination therapy based upon a nearly 40% replacement of levodopa by bromocriptine.

The organization of optimal microenvironmental conditions within the developing thymus for lymphatic stem cell migration and their further maturation requires cellular and humoral participation of the neural crest. Recently, the immunophenotypical (IP) heterogeneity of lymphatic cells has become a scientific fact. Monoclonal antibodies (MoABs) produced against the various subpopulations of the reticulo-epithelial cells (RE) demonstrated their heterogeneity.

During a systematic, immunocytochemical screening of 40 human cutaneous melanomas (30 primary and 10 metastatic) for immunophenotype (IP) heterogeneity, we employed a library of 20 well characterized, commercially available mono- and polyclonal antibodies. The use of the sensitive, indirect, four to six step immunoperoxidase or alkaline phosphatase conjugated streptavidin-biotin antigen detection technique provided excellent results. The immunocytochemically most characteristic IP for primary cutaneous melanoma, as detected by us was: HMB45+, S-100+, CEA+, vimentin+, cytokeratin 19+, p53+, Rbgene+, nm23+, HLA-DR+, HL.

Nature recruited telomerase to compensate for the incomplete replication of chromosomal ends (telomeres). In higher organisms, telomeres are eroded at each cell division. Cancer cells frequently show chromosomal instability resulting in ring chromosomes, telomeric associations, and dicentric chromosomes.
