Background: Black recipients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) have decreased patient and graft survival compared with white recipients, a finding that is primarily limited to black recipients of livers from white donors. The cause(s) for these discrepant outcomes are unclear but may be related to HCV disease recurrence. The rates of HCV-related disease recurrence and liver fibrosis progression among black and white liver transplant recipients have not been investigated.

We present a contemporary surgical series for PE that demonstrates the utility of peripheral extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (pECMO) for high-risk surgical candidates.
Methods: Between June 2005 and April 2011, 29 patients were treated for massive or submassive pulmonary embolism, with surgical embolectomy performed in 26.
The objective of this study was to relate behaviour change mechanisms to nutritionally relevant behaviour and demonstrate how the different mechanisms can affect attempts to change these behaviours. Folate was used as an example to illuminate the possibilities and challenges in inducing behaviour change. The behaviours affecting folate intake were recognised and categorised.

In this paper, we focus on the compositional and mechanistic aspects of CdS:CaI complexes that control the photochemical conversion of solar energy into H(2). Self-assembly of CdS with CaI was driven by electrostatics, demonstrated as the inhibition of ferredoxin-mediated H(2) evolution by CaI.

The oxovanadium units provide an anionic scaffolding to the structure, where two types of Cu(II) coordination modes, octahedral (Cu1) and square pyramidal (Cu2), contribute to the magnetic properties. The crystal structure contains layers including Cu1 and Cu2 ions, separated by stacked arrangements of 2,2'-bipyridine molecules.

A zero in the electric field profile traps the particle above the probe surface, avoiding adhesion, and the repulsive region surrounding the zero pushes other particles away, preventing clustering. Triaxial probes are promising for three-dimensional assembly and for selective imaging of a particular property of a sample using interchangeable functionalized particles.

The liver kinase B1 (LKB1) is encoded by the STK11 gene and acts as a tumour suppressor and a regulator of energy homeostasis. LKB1 expression is reduced in primary breast tumours compared to normal breast epithelium. Although its expression in primary tumours does not appear to correlate with estrogen receptor (ER) status, it is differentially expressed in breast cancer cell lines where ER-negative cells have lower LKB1 expression than ER-positive cells.
