Investigational therapeutics that target toxic species of α-synuclein (αSyn) aim to slow down or halt disease progression in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Here this 44-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, single-center phase 1 study investigated safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of UB-312, an active immunotherapeutic targeting pathological αSyn, in patients with PD. The primary outcome measures were adverse event frequency and change in anti-αSyn antibody titers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

GDF15, a hormone acting on the brainstem, has been implicated in the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, including its most severe form, hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), but a full mechanistic understanding is lacking. Here we report that fetal production of GDF15 and maternal sensitivity to it both contribute substantially to the risk of HG. We confirmed that higher GDF15 levels in maternal blood are associated with vomiting in pregnancy and HG.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of the peripapillary gamma zone in myopic, emmetropic, and hyperopic eyes of Chinese children.

Methods: Overall, 1274 children aged 6 to 8 years from the Hong Kong Children Eye Study underwent ocular examinations, including measurements of cycloplegic auto-refraction and axial length (AL). The optic disc was imaged using a Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT) unit and a protocol involving 24 equally spaced radial B-scans.

Background And Purpose: Pretreatment prediction of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who will fail conventional treatment would potentially allow these patients to undergo more intensive treatment or closer posttreatment monitoring. The aim of the study was to determine the ability of pretreatment DWI to predict local failure in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma based on long-term clinical outcome.

Acetylxylan esterase genes axe6A and axe6B located adjacent to one another on a Fibrobacter succinogenes chromosome have been separately cloned and their properties characterized. The corresponding esterases contained an N-terminal carbohydrate esterase family 6 catalytic domain (CD) and a C-terminal family 6 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM). The amino acid sequences of the CDs and CBMs were found to exhibit 52% and 40% amino acid similarity, respectively.

The broadly reactive cysteine protease dipeptidyl peptidase I (DPPI, cathepsin C) is thought to activate all progranzymes (zymogens of lymphocyte serine proteases) to form mature granzymes. We synthesized dipeptide 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) substrates containing progranzyme activation sequences and showed that they were efficiently hydrolyzed by DPPI. However, DPPI will not hydrolyze Ile-Ile-AMC, the N-terminal dipeptide sequence found in mature granzymes.
