Recommendations for Specialty Palliative APRN Graduate Education.

Background: Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are essential to care for the growing number of individuals with advanced illness given the shortage of palliative care clinicians.

Problem: Graduate education for specialty practice palliative APRNs lacks consistency in structure, content, and standardization of specialty palliative APRN education.

Approach: A workgroup of expert palliative APRNs and graduate faculty conducted focused discussions and a literature review to develop consensus recommendations based on national palliative APRN competencies and aligned with the 8 core concepts of the AACN Essentials.

Clinical Course, Antifungal Susceptibility, and Genomic Sequencing of Trichophyton indotineae.

Importance: Trichophyton indotineae is an emerging dermatophyte causing outbreaks of extensive tinea infections often unresponsive to terbinafine. This species has been detected worldwide and in multiple US states, yet detailed US data on infections with T indotineae are sparse and could improve treatment practices and medical understanding of transmission.

Objective: To correlate clinical features of T indotineae infections with in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing results, squalene epoxidase gene sequence variations, and isolate relatedness using whole-genome sequencing.

A quality improvement initiative to reduce antibiotic use in transient tachypnea of the newborn.

Objective: Evidence suggests that antibiotics are unnecessary in infants with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) that are low-risk for early-onset sepsis. The aim was to reduce ampicillin and gentamicin days of therapy (DOT) in infants with suspected TTN by 10% within 12 months.

Study Design: We used the Model for Improvement to test interventions from August 2019 to September 2021 to decrease antibiotic utilization in low-risk infants with TTN.

Nursing Faculty Workforce Development Project.

A proposed nursing faculty workforce development project by a college of nursing within a research-intensive institution will increase the number of nurse faculty from the current population of BSN-prepared nurses from underserved communities in a state to earn a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree with a nursing education specialty. This project will be accomplished through partnerships between a college of nursing and academic institutions with large nursing student populations from underserved communities. In addition, the project will incorporate the employment of MSN students at academic partner institutions within a clinical nurse faculty role.

Early Treatment of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children.

Background And Objectives: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a severe hyperinflammatory illness occurring after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. The optimal treatment of MIS-C is unknown, although prior studies have indicated benefits of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and glucocorticoids. We hypothesize that early treatment with glucocorticoids is associated with shorter hospital length of stay (LOS).
