Article Synopsis
  • Dendritic cells (DCs) play a crucial role in starting immune responses by presenting antigens to T lymphocytes, but the effects of tomato-derived saponin Esculeoside A (EsA) on these cells were not well understood.
  • This study found that EsA and its related compound, esculeogenin A (Esg-A), reduced the maturation and function of mice bone marrow-derived DCs when stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), leading to less efficient T-cell activation.
  • The research also highlighted that EsA/Esg-A inhibited key signaling pathways involved in immune response, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for modulating DCs in immune-related conditions.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a globally prevalent and deadly malignancy often diagnosed at advanced stages, which can be accompanied by liver metastases. Conventional chemotherapy is contraindicated in patients with severe liver failure because several chemotherapeutic agents are metabolized by the liver. The present study reports on the successful use of nivolumab in a patient with advanced GC and severe liver failure owing to multiple liver metastases.
