We bioprinted meniscus tissue on the International Space Station (ISS) using the onboard BioFabrication Facility (BFF). The three dimensional (3D) printing bioink, cells, culture media and fixative were delivered to the ISS on NG-18 and SpX-27 vehicles and stored prior to the printing operation. The meniscus tissue was fabricated from ink composed of collagens type I and II, chondroitin sulfate and mesenchymal stem cells.

New approach methods (NAMs) for assessing issues of gastrointestinal tract (GIT)- related toxicity offer promise in addressing some of the limitations associated with animal-based assessments. GIT NAMs vary in complexity, from two-dimensional monolayer cell line-based systems to sophisticated 3-dimensional organoid systems derived from human primary cells.

In these environments, stocks of supplies will become more quickly depleted and the need for equipment parts increases secondary to their higher likelihood for failure from overuse. Additive Manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, at or closer to the point-of-need provides potential solutions to mitigate these logistics challenges.

The SMC aimed to provide public health teams with local-data-driven modelling, data analysis, and policy and commissioning advice to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the local population. It also aimed to answer operational questions, since the Government's forecasts were not suitably applicable.
