Oxaliplatin (L-OHP) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) are used to treat colon cancer; however, resistance contributes to poor prognosis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been induced in tumor tissues after administration of anticancer drugs and may be involved in drug resistance. We investigated the mechanism of EMT induction in colon cancer cells treated with 5-FU and L-OHP.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is associated with various indicators of independent living among community-dwelling older adults in Japan. The study design was a cross-sectional study, and the participants were 107 community-dwelling older adults (mean age 79 ± 7 years) who were living independently. The participants were administered the Questionnaire for Medical Checkup of Old-Old (QMCOO) as an indicator of health status and the Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence (JST-IC) as an indicator of higher levels of functioning capacity, among others.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of gut microbiome data from Parkinson's disease (PD) patients across different countries, revealing distinct microbial differences compared to controls and highlighting an overall increase in microbial diversity in PD.
  • Key findings showed significant changes in specific bacteria, notably an increase in Akkermansia muciniphila and decreases in Roseburia intestinalis and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, along with reduced levels of fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and polyamines linked to riboflavin and biotin biosynthesis.
  • The study suggests that these microbial and metabolic changes may contribute to the development of PD by reducing intestinal mucus, potentially leading to neuroinflammation and the formation of

Article Synopsis
  • - A middle-aged woman developed acute compartment syndrome (ACS) in all four extremities after overdosing on multiple medications, including nifedipine and olmesartan, which led to severe swelling and skin necrosis.
  • - Her condition required emergency intubation due to haemodynamic instability, and despite initial stabilization, escalating limb swelling was noted, with compartment pressures exceeding 30 mm Hg.
  • - The case suggests that the ACS was likely triggered by drug-induced angio-oedema from the medications, highlighting the need for careful monitoring for ACS in patients experiencing significant limb swelling after such overdoses.

High-throughput screening instrument was developed for photocatalytic water purification, enabling the simultaneous testing of 132 photocatalytic reactions under uniform visible light irradiation, temperature control, and stirring. The instrument was used to investigate the effects of different catalysts (TiO, ZnO, α-FeO) and environmental waters (seawater, urban wastewater, and industrial wastewater) on dye degradation. It was observed environmental ions, particularly carbonate and phosphate ions, significantly reduced catalyst activity by inhibiting the adsorption of dye molecules.
