Background: Gaps in quality of care are seriously affecting maternal and neonatal health globally but reports of successful quality improvement cycles implemented at large scale are scanty. We report the results of a nation-wide program to improve quality of maternal and neonatal hospital care in a lower-middle income country focusing on the role played by standard-based participatory assessments.
Methods: Improvements in the quality of maternal and neonatal care following an action-oriented participatory assessment of 19 areas covering the whole continuum from admission to discharge were measured after an average period of 10 months in four busy referral maternity hospitals in Uzbekistan.
Background: The study was conducted to compare the efficacy and acceptability of second-trimester induction termination using vaginal misoprostol to hypertonic saline and d-cloprostenol, a prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF) analogue, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Study Design: Eleven clinics providing second-trimester induction terminations were randomized to provide one of two regimens for second-trimester induction termination: vaginal misoprostol 400 mcg every 3 h or hypertonic 10% saline intrauterine instillation plus an intravenous PGF analogue, d-cloprostenol, 2.5 mg/h.
Objective: Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase with N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induces a preeclampsia-like syndrome of hypertension, proteinuria, intrauterine growth restriction, and renal glomerular capillary endothelial lesions in pregnant rats. We attempted to reverse these changes with late-pregnancy administration of L-arginine.
Study Design: Sprague Dawley rats with timed pregnancies received infusions of either saline solution (n = 12) (group SC) or L-NAME (n = 12) (group LC) (160 mg/kg per day) on gestational day 10 through term.
