Cytokine storm syndromes such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD), and COVID-19 cytokine storm (CCS) are characterized by markedly elevated inflammatory cytokines. However clinical measurement of serum cytokines is not widely available. This study examined the clinical utility of C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin, two inexpensive and widely available inflammatory markers, for distinguishing HLH from AOSD and CCS.

Many patients cannot tolerate low-dose weekly methotrexate (MTX) therapy for inflammatory arthritis treatment due to life-threatening toxicity. Although biologics offer a target-specific therapy, it raises the risk of serious infections and even cancer due to immune system suppression. We introduce an anti-inflammatory arthritis MTX ester prodrug using a long-circulating biocompatible polymeric macromolecule: folic acid (FA) functionalized hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG).

Objective: Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH) are both hyperferritinemic cytokine storm syndromes that can be difficult to distinguish from each other in hospitalized patients. The objective of this study was to compare the inflammatory markers ferritin, D-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), and soluble CD25 (sCD25) in patients with AOSD and sHLH. These four markers were chosen as they are widely available and represent different aspects of inflammatory diseases: macrophage activation (ferritin); endothelialopathy (D-dimer); interleukin-1/interleukin-6/tumour necrosis factor elevation (CRP) and T cell activation (sCD25).

We aimed to (1) identify existing triage approaches for referral of patients with suspected inflammatory arthritis (IA) from primary care physicians (PCP) to rheumatologists, (2) describe their characteristics and methodologies for clinical use, and (3) report their level of validation for use in a publicly funded healthcare system. The comprehensive search strategy of multiple databases up to October 2023 identified relevant literature and focussed on approaches applied at the PCP-Rheumatologist referral stage. Primary, quantitative studies, reported in English were included.

Objective: There is surging interest in using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) to identify cardiovascular monosodium urate (MSU) deposits in patients with gout. We sought to examine the prevalence and characterization of cardiovascular DECT artifacts using non-electrocardiogram (EKG)-gated DECT pulmonary angiograms.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed non-EKG-gated DECT pulmonary angiograms performed on patients with and without gout at a single academic center.
