Children in rural communities encounter unique environmental exposures, many of which can result in negative long-term health consequences. Children are particularly at risk from these exposures due to their close interaction with the environment and developing physiology. The authors describe 3 rural environmental hazards: wood stove smoke, well water contaminants, and agricultural pollutants.

A double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study of immunoglobulin for small fiber neuropathy associated with TS-HDS and FGFR-3 autoantibodies.

Introduction/aims: Small fiber neuropathies (SFN) have been associated with two autoantibodies, trisulfated heparin disaccharide (TS-HDS) and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR-3), and intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) has been suggested as a potential therapy. The study objective is to determine the efficacy of IVIG on nerve density, pain and neurologic examinations in patients with SFN associated with TS-HDS and FGFR-3 autoantibodies.

Methods: This was a double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study.

Tumor microenvironment is a complex system composed of a largely altered extracellular matrix (ECM) with different cell types that determine the angiogenic response. Upon the influence of hypoxia, tumor cells secrete cytokines that activate stromal cells to produce proteases and angiogenic factors. The proteases degrade the stromal ECM and participate in the release of various ECM fragments, named matrikines or matricryptins, capable to control tumor invasion and metastasis dissemination.
