[Unusual course of Candida endocarditis].

Fever, anemia, pulmonary infiltrates and weight loss occurred in a 47-year-old man four weeks after a gastric operation. On echocardiography and cardiac catheterization an atrial myxoma was revealed. In removing the myxoma the tricuspid valve apparatus was destroyed, requiring insertion of a bio-prosthetic valve (Hancock).

Intracellular sodium concentration and transport in red cells in essential hypertension, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy and hypokalemia.

Unlabelled: Intracellular sodium content ([Nai]), ouabain-sensitive ('Na-K ATPase') and ouabain-insensitive ('passive permeability') sodium efflux, Na-K cotransport and Na-Li ('Na-Na') countertransport were estimated in erythrocytes in 39 control subjects, 20 patients with essential hypertension, 14 patients with hypokalemia of renal or unknown etiology, 13 hyperthyroid patients and 19 pregnant women. In normokalemic essential hypertension there was only a moderate, but significant elevation of the activity of the Na-Li countertransport system. In the group of patients with hypokalemia, there was a significant increase of [Nai], ouabain-insensitive sodium efflux and Na-Li countertransport.

[Therapeutic possibilities in hypereosinophilia syndrome with Löffler's fibroplastic endomyocarditis. Efficacy of cytarabine and 6-thioguanine].

In two of four patients with hypereosinophilia and Löffler's myocarditis (confirmed by biopsy) the activity of the disease was contained with prednisone, in one instance combined with hydroxycarbamide. In two patients, in whom the disease was taking a fulminant course and other treatment had failed, cytarabine and 6-thioguanine proved effective, providing a 16-month symptom-free period in one of them. But the second patient died from septicaemia associated with treatment-induced bone-marrow hypoplasia.

Peripheral effects of thyroid hormones: alteration of intracellular Na-concentration, ouabain-sensitive Na-transport, and Na-Li countertransport in human red blood cells.

To investigate the effect of thyroid hormones on erythrocyte cation transport systems and intracellular electrolyte content we have measured the activity of Na-K ATPase, Na-Li countertransport, as well as red cell sodium and potassium contents in patients with hyperthyroidism and in euthyroid controls. Intracellular Na- and K-concentrations were determined in erythrocytes washed three times in isotonic MgCl2 solution. Ouabain-sensitive Na-transport was estimated as the increase of Na before and after addition of ouabain in an erythrocyte suspension in isotonic Na-free medium.
