Association Between Preterm Birth and Fulfillment of Desired Permanent Contraception.

Objectives: In cases of preterm delivery, the Medicaid sterilization policy mandates a signed consent form at least 72 h before surgery for permanent contraception, which is less than the 30 day minimum waiting period for term births. This study evaluated the association between preterm birth and fulfillment of planned permanent contraception.

Study Design: This was a secondary analysis of a multi-center retrospective cohort study of 3013 patients with a postpartum contraceptive plan of permanent contraception.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in locally advanced colon cancer: A systematic review with proportional meta-analysis.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is suggested in locally advanced colon cancer. Data on improved long-term oncological outcomes are lacking, which hampers the implementation in clinical practice. This systematic review provides an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced colon cancer.

Systematic characterization of zinc in a series of breast cancer cell lines reveals significant changes in zinc homeostasis.

An optimal amount of labile zinc (Zn ) is essential for proliferation of human cells, where Zn levels that are too high or too low cause cell cycle exit. Tumors of the breast have been characterized by high levels of total Zn . Given the role of Zn in proliferation of human cells and elevation of zinc in breast cancer tumors, we examined the concentration of total and labile Zn across a panel of 5 breast cancer cell lines, compared to the normal MCF10A cell line.

Neighborhood Social Processes and Adolescents' Depressive Symptoms: The Intervening Role of Neighborhood Self-Efficacy.

Via observational data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods collected between 1994 and 2001, this study examined the degree to which neighborhood disorder, collective efficacy, and youth-centered institutional resources are directly associated with adolescents' depressive symptoms across time, and the mediating role of adolescents'neighborhood self-efficacy. Latent variable structural equation models were estimated among an unweighted representative sample of 1448 adolescents (59% male, mean age 15.19), across 79 neighborhoods in Chicago, to examine the direct effects of neighborhood disorder, collective efficacy, and availability of youth-centered resources at baseline (measured at timepoint 1; reported by an independent sample of Chicago adults) on adolescents' depressive symptoms (measured a timepoint 3), and the mediating effect of adolescents' neighborhood-anchored self-efficacy (measured at timepoint 2).

Cochlear Implant Electrode Placement and Music Perception.

Importance: Cochlear implants enable improvements in speech perception, but music perception outcomes remain variable. Image-guided cochlear implant programming has emerged as a potential programming strategy for increasing the quality of spectral information delivered through the cochlear implant to improve outcomes.

Objectives: To perform 2 experiments, the first of which modeled the variance in music perception scores as a function of electrode positioning factors, and the second of which evaluated image-guided cochlear implant programming as a strategy to improve music perception with a cochlear implant.
